Acoustic Energy 1 series – Now at Purite North
This new-from-the-ground-up range are extremely affordable, room-friendly loudspeakers designed for stereo and multichannel use. They comprise two stereo models – the standmount 101s at just £275 per pair, and the floorstanding 103s at an absurdly reasonable £550 per pair, as well as a matching center (£199) and active sub (£600) for A/V use.
They differ significantly from preceding ranges, being front slot-ported for improved room integration in smaller domestic environments, and in the case of the 103 floorstanders, featuring a sloped baffle to improve time-alignment of the drivers. All trickle-down technology from the hugely successful 3-series.
Driver technology comprises a conventional soft-dome tweeter for excellent dispersion characteristics and benign behaviour at critical frequencies. This is teamed with AE’s traditional alloy mid-bass units for excellent stiffness and pistonic behaviour – giving an excellent sense of timing, open midrange and crisp bass response.
The 101s feature a single reflex loaded mid-bass unit, while the 103s use two such drivers in a two-and-a-half-
way configuration to cover mid and bass frequencies. In both cases bass response greatly belies the loudspeakers’ compact sizes.
Available finishes include black ash and walnut. Both are good quality vinyl, a fact only visible under a lens, so good is the finish, and usefully combining practicality with great value for money. Appearances are further enhanced by magnetic grilles, so no unsightly locating lugs are required. The look is crisp, purposeful and modern – being by some margin the best-looking offer in their price range according to Paul at Purité!
Typically for Acoustic Energy’s contemporary loudspeakers, they are a benign amplifier load at 87 – 90dB sensitivity with an impedance that never drops below 6Ω. Purité North usually demonstrate them with valve and low-powered solid state amplifiers in the 10-30 watt range! Acoustic Energy’s 101s and 103s are currently available to demo at Purité’s North Yorkshire HQ – unusual in itself for such reasonably-priced loudspeakers. To book a demo, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01757 706372.
