I have been into hi-fi for a number of years but I am becoming increasingly frustrated with my set-up and which is constantly changing in the aim of improvement. Currently Im using B&W 803 diamonds. I have always been very happy with B&W and Ive had several different variants over the years, but I am now finding that the mid range (especially female vocals) are just not being presented realistically by the cevlar driver of the B&W. I am searching for a suitable upgrade which will present this aspect of the sound stage more fluidly and realistically. I am considering the following brands...MBL 116f, Audio Physic Cardeas, PMC MB2SE and ART 8.3 and B&W 802 DIAMOND (This is going to spark some debate no doubt). I'd be very interested to hear from people who might have upgraded from 803 to 802 and to learn of your opinions as to the relative gains to housing the mid range in its own separate head and the effect it has upon the tweeter and is it worth the expense to upgrade? (Marlon head).

I know I must listen to each one and preferably in my system, however I am calling upon all you guys (& gals) out there to offer me some advice based on your possible knowledge of the aforementioned models and also models Im not currently considering. I know i know I know...many of you will scream at me that it's my ears which will make the decision but the combined knowledge of the masses will assist me in sifting through the many different options.

To all my fellow posters who decide to chip in here I thank you all in advance and I appreciate any comments...good or bad.

Regards to all,

There seems to be a few people suggesting that the cheap USB microscopes you can now buy for £20-£40 are capable of taking decent enough pictures of your cartridge and some even use them for setting VTA.

With the recent stupid demise of my cartridge http://www.hifiwigwam.com/showthread...eaning-options and the considerable cost difference in a new "tip" compared to cantilever & tip plus other possible option of buying a used replacement cartridge I thought it was worth taking a punt. Whilst you can probably buy one cheaper from ebay I have a pretty good relationship with my local Maplin and the manager so quizzed him on the likely suitability (he normally just tells me to bring it back if not suitable for my purpose) and as such I bought one of these:- http://www.maplin.co.uk/usb-digital-...ication-286566

I have only had an hour to spend playing with it so bear with me whilst I figure out how best to obtain the best from it.
There are a couple of quite major limitations that may determine if it is suitable for others or other uses:-
1) it has a realistic magnification range of 20-60x and 350-400x with nothing in the middle that can be focused properly. Focus control is essentially dictated by distance from objact the level of zoom.
2) the 8 off LED lights are only suitable upto 20-60x range - at the higehr end there is not enough light to obtain an image and a secondary light source must also be used (I use a focused LED head torch on a soldering stand in the pictures below).
3) at the high levels of magnification you need to be incredibly close to the cartridge - the cantilever is actually in the perpex bowl containing the LEDs for the pictures below. You can't use this to inspect the "tip" with the cartridge on the arm/deck. At lower levels of zoom (20-60x range) you can use it at a distance of about 20mm from the object.
4) The depth of field is very small.
5) the zoom (which controls the focus) is coarse in adjustment and it probably took me 2-5 minutes to obtain each image below at the higher levels of zoom and there is still quite some scope for betterment by spending more time/even-so-slightly moving the micrscope/cartridge nearer.farer to get better focus.

Please bear in mind that the actual diamond "tip" is tiny and the cartridges pictured are spares that have not been used/cleaned.

20x Zoom
Ortofon MC15 Super II - needs a bloody good clean!

Lyra Dorian - Sans Tip

350-400X Zoom
Ortofon MC15 Super II - oooh yuck (this hasn't been used for 2 years)

No pics of Dorian as yet as it is still on the turntable.

With a better lighting arrangement with light from all directiosn and more diffuse the images can be improved. Again at 20x magnification use of additional lighting will improve the results (I didn't use a secondary light source for the above pics).

The software is actually pretty good. Very easy to get started and working. It can also dimension and angle from the image which would be useful for VTA adjustment freaks, you basically enter the zoom rate and draw a line on the image and select the unit you want to use and iit automatically calculates a scaled dimension for you.

It is fiddly and frustrating to use but for a cheap device I am quite impressed.

I fancy having a look at a decent microscope & SLR mounting adaptor now!
