Australia is the last bastion of the rear wheel drive Ford sedan, but from 2014 the Falcon will be discontinued. A strong Oz dollar has hit exports, and falling demand at home mean Ford feel it is not economically viable to continue.

Having seen some of the Falcons here, I'm amazed they have lasted this long. Bloody 'orrible things, in my opinion. Huge on the outside, but not spacious inside. Some people love them for their comfortable ride, but you don't need rear wheel drive for that.

A great shame, but indicative of the way cars are going. There's a greater difference between 'it's just a car' and an enthusiasts vehicle now, than there ever has been.

The UK motor industry built some absolute shockers, so no wonder it disappeared. Some of them were actually quite good, but were let down by poor manufacture. My best buddy at university got a Hillman Imp, and it was a brilliant little car, except for its tendency to blow head gaskets (3 in a year, IIRC). He ended up with a Beetle - not so interesting, but it went, and went, and went, and went...

I've been tootling around in a 206 1.4 diesel for over a year now, and it's starting to depress me. Yes it's piss cheap to run but that's the only positive thing I can take from it.

So I was looking at something a bit more fun for the summer (and cheap). Have been browsing ~10 year old MR2's, Celica's, MX5's etc etc. Hadn't really considered an MGF as I always thought that they had a rep for being a bit shite. But looking at owners reviews on Parkers they're suprisingly positive! So there's a year-2000 MGF close to me for ~1200 notes, with about 60k mileage, fsh, full MOT, 5 months tax, and looks immaculate. There's plenty of others around from £800-1500 that all look pretty tidy.

Are they worth considering, or are they all unreliable pieces of garbage...?

Hmmm, I guess I'm going to have to admit it to myself - I miss my convertible :(

Trouble is with the future plans a diesel is probably the only way I can make it stack financially and I don't plan to do anything straight away (a new petrol is just out of the question) but I'd like to garner some thoughts on the Audi diesels.

i don't like hardtop convertibles so a newer BMW is out unless I got a 1 series and this is an option but I'm just not keen on the road presence whereas an A4 or A/S5 just look so nice.

the main thing is I don't want the diesel rattle to ruin the hood down experience - I know it'll be fine at full pelt but how intrusive are these engines at lower speeds?

my expectations are realistic but I don't want to take the mick out of sellers by tyre kicking (I'd hate it happening to me) so would value your opinion :)

I always thought the CC was a 2+2 but I see from a quick search that it was 'updated' to allow 5 adults in the back.

CC seems the most likely car for an immimenet return to the UK is a CC (dunno if it's the new CC, or the old Passat CC). The other 'possibilities' are 320d, X3 (kid friendly) or a Freelander (no thanks).

If anyone who knows the CC could shine a light I could always write a grovelling mail to Thirfty begging for the 320d / X3 and see if that helps

The overpriced, underpowered and not especially economical to run Smart car....
You're a male, under 45 and still have some aspirations when it comes to style.

The entry level Smart car costs £9575 and they rise to £16k.
For less than £10k you can purchase the following as a quick example:

Ford Fiesta
Volkswagen Polo
Fiat 500

So, the question is this....Is the Smart car shit? Would you want one?
