Cyclist has said he is lucky to be alive after being hit by a car whose driver is believed to have tweeted about the crash.

Toby Hockley was on the 100-mile Boudicca Sportive ride in Norfolk on Sunday when he was struck by a car and flung into a hedge, he said.

The incident is being linked to a comment on Twitter by a Norwich woman.

It read: "Definitely knocked a cyclist off his bike earlier. I have right of way - he doesn't even pay road tax!"

The tweet included the hashtag "#Bloodycyclists".

The message has been forwarded to Norfolk Police, who are investigating.
'Hit me hard'
Toby Hockley Toby Hockley (centre) said the Twitter comments were "stupid"

Mr Hockley, 29, from Norwich, was riding with Iceni Velo cycling club on a narrow country lane, about five miles away from the end of the route at Snetterton.

"A car came tearing round the blind corner and narrowly missed a cyclist in front of me," he said.

"She came on to my side of the road, I took the wing mirror off and I went flying off my bike into a hedge.

"She hit me hard, really hard. I am lucky to be alive.

"But I managed to get out of the hedge and stand up.

"The car was nowhere to be seen. She hit me and she was gone.

"All I know is that it was a blonde girl driving."
'Second-class citizens'

The freelance chef said he felt battered and bruised but was able to finish the course after a few roadside fixes to his bike.

"I burst out laughing, I couldn't believe how lucky I was and that I was still in one piece," he said.

The comment on Twitter suggested Toby Hockley, as a cyclist, does not pay "road tax".

A road tax does not exist in the UK but the term is commonly and incorrectly used to refer to the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), or "car tax" paid on most motorised vehicles as a tax on emissions.

Roads are funded by all UK taxpayers under general and local taxes.

Source:Gov.uk

"I had a hug with my co-rider at the side of the road and was just full of adrenaline.

"But when I finished, the aches and pains set in and I had a bit of sulk in the cafe and had an ice-cream."

Mr Hockley said he was planning to keep the incident to himself so as not to worry his girlfriend but changed his mind after reading Twitter.

"I think she came across as a very silly girl and made herself look like a bit of a fool," he said.

"I'm not angry, I would just like it known that her stupid comment that I don't pay road tax is not an excuse to treat cyclists like second-class citizens."

The woman's Twitter account has been removed.

Norfolk Police said it was investigating and had spoken to both parties.

Something has just happened to me that feels really nice and I thought I would share it.

I play saxophone. About 4 years ago, some mates invited me to a Jazz Jam Session that they knew of. So I went. It was my first time there. Nice set up, with a nice PA and a guy on a mixing desk etc. Good room, with a nice acoustic. Good standard of players.

Anyway, there is an old Lad (70 plus) there. Playing solo guitar. He had been a pro all his days, but those days were behind him now, sadly. He didnt like playing with a band as it was too noisy for him, but he still loved to get up and do his stuff. You could tell that he knew what was what in terms of harmony and improvisation etc. He had been really good at some point.

The guy hosting the Jam, approaches me and asks if I would like to play a couple of numbers with this guitar player. Just a duet. Sure says I. I cant remember what we played, but we did it. I thought no more about it.

The old lad died about 6 months ago. And guess what music he wanted played at his funeral. Yep, our little duet. The guy on the mixing desk had recorded it. I didnt know about this, but the old lad did. He got a copy.

He loved our duet, and asked his family to play it at his funeral, in the church. WOW !!!!

The family have now tracked me down and are sending me a copy of the recording. They have also sent a picture of him in his younger days astride a motor bike. A Triumph. This was his other passion. So much so that there was no hearse. His coffin was carried to the church on an adapted motor bike with a side car.

I am deeply touched by this. What an honour.

I hope you dont mind me sharing it.

An Italian man was leaving a convenience store with his espresso when he
noticed a most unusual Italian funeral procession approaching the nearby
cemetery. A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50
Feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary
Italian man walking a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back,
were about 200 men walking single file.

The man couldn't stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the
Italian man walking the dog and said:

"I am so sorry for your loss, and this may be a bad time to disturb you,
but I've never seen an Italian funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?"

"My wife's."

''What happened to her?"
"She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her."

He inquired further, "But who is in the second hearse?"

The Italian man answered, "My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my
wife when the dog turned on her."

A very poignant and touching moment of Italian brotherhood and silence
passed between the two men.

"Can I borrow the dog?"

The man replied, "Get in line."
