The modern Bourne, like Bond, suffers from the problem of the demise of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, meaning that new plots had to be devised. The Bourne trilogy preserves the killing machine with no memory and Treadstone, but that's about all. In this case, this film was made when there still was a Soviet Union and a terrorist called Carlos "The Jackal" (Bourne's adversary in the books), so it is actually fairly true to the book, except that the book is part of a series and this film wasn't, so a different ending had to be provided.

My problem with Richard Chamberlain as Bourne is that I go back to him in the incredibly soppy Dr. Kildare TV series, when he was a dashingly handsome heartthrob, and I can't get that image out of my head! And somehow Matt Damon was more fun. But it was an interesting watch.

I know that this film is absolutely ancient, but for some reason I've never managed to see the whole thing. In addition, the bits I've occasionally caught on German TV seemed to have been edited oddly, as if bits had been cut out (too much gore?). Anyway, I finally succeeded the other night, because someone has put the whole thing, gore, bad language and all, on YouTube.

Normally I find action thrillers a bit of a bore, as they constantly rehash the same themes. However, I really enjoyed this one - as Matt Damon somehow brought life to the inherently cartoonish Jason Bourne, so the combination of Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage (plus Ed Harris) really worked well in this one. The plot holes and improbabilities could have swallowed an entire depot of London buses, but I found the whole thing really entertaining. I guess one really can say that they don't make 'em llike that any more.
