Frequency Response and Frequency Range? (speakers)

A speaker may have a quoted frequency range of something like 25hz to 25,000Hz, but the frequency response means that the sound pressure levels can vary at any frequency. So, the frequency response curves you see show you how many decibels up or down your speakers measure across a freqency range.

Here's a frequency response curve* from my speakers (Amphion Argon2), as you can see, the low frequencies start to roll-off at around 100Hz.


* Response curve is an average of five measurements:
on-axis, 15 degrees left and right off-axis,
15 degrees up and down off-axis

Frequency response quotes the limits that the response stays within, for example, 45Hz-20kHz +- 5dB This would be a typical response figure for a reasonably good loudspeaker.

Frequency range is a marketing term, that doesn't quote limits, and consequently can mean anything, but typically will mean the range over which something will be heard. In the above example, they could quote a frequency range of 20Hz-35kHz, as something would be heard/measured at these frequencies, however much down on mid-frequencies.

Any reputable non-BS manufacturer will quote a frequency response with limits.
