Do you know any good independent classical record shops in the UK? Nice to browse sometimes in a real shop.

Thanks Tel. It would be good to have a list of a few recommended shops. The only one I know shall remain anonymous as I think the owner is unbearably snooty and so I rarely ever go there. A shame really as it's local.

The Outback, Church Street, Hereford.
These guys are superb:

Excellent, MB, getting closer to home for me. I've heard of that shop before. Love the look of the storefront. Is that Rennie Mackintosh?
Edit: sorry, no offense to the Southerners, all recommendations warmly welcome.

So whereabouts are you then Tryant?
Strange place called Solaris.
Actually, I have no idea where Hove and Hereford are, but they sound like they're very far away.

We haven't any now in the immediate vicinity; all the specialist ones in Leeds have gone and Manchester's best (Forsythe's) have ridiculous prices which are a joke. So yes, it's good to browse and get ideas, but I'd never buy in one anymore - unless it had a good used section as some do now. Cob Records in Porthmadog, where I go regularly, is excellent in this respect, although stock levels are variable.
Greetings Pianoman. Is there, or was there once upon a time, a good shop in York? I have this vague recollection of a good shop in York but can't find it anymore. Maybe it's just my imagination.

York?
Is that miles up North like that London is?

York = Banks - still there??
Yep: http://www.banksmusic.co.uk/
The website's not fully functional, though.
Yes Banks is still pretty good - actually very much like Forsythe's in being a big music shop that sells all sorts of instruments, pianos, sheet music, and a pretty comprehensive CD dept. though again it's full price (and a bit)
You may be thinking of a second hand one on Micklegate that also sells vinyl, can't remember the name, not even sure if it still exists.
I was in Carlisle last summer and there was quite a good place opposite the Cathedral -again can't remember name but it sold books, coffee, and was generally a nice place to spend an hour or two.
Can't remember the name of the other one, either! I know they used a Blake image as their logo, though!

If you're in Rye, Sussex, there's the Old Grammar School record shop in the High Street, big well-organised stock of rock/jazz viny bu the classsical takes abit more sorting through !

I love you. No, sorry, I missed some words out. I love it when the world shits on you. Yeah. That's the full sentence.
My favourite!

in a wonderful little place called Bishop's Castle in Shropshire. Beautiful countryside (think Housman / Vaughan Williams "On Wenlock Edge"), and a great shop. Secondhand books, and classical LPs and CDs. Off-beat, and lots of British stuff.

Cool, now we're getting somewhere. I can see a drive over to Carlisle, a weekend in Shropshire in the spring. Who knows, maybe even a summer expedition to Hove! Keep 'em coming, guys. This is looking good!
