This is only really for confirmation - I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on the subject can confirm for me that it's the chip-set in the soundcard that regulates whether it's possible to output 24bit 96khz soundfiles.

I had hoped that shifting to USB connection with my B'dac might remove the need to use the M Audio Transit that I did with the optical connection.

I'm using ASIO4All with Media Monkey/Foobar but cant get higher than 48 khz to play.

It's got more jewels than Princess Grace, Buckminster-Fuller designed the case
Leonardo engraved the face, and did the calibrations
And those knobs and screws and toggles - the imagination boggles...

Most USB devices limit files to 16/44.1 or 16/48 maximum due to the bandwidth constraints imposed by USB (apparently - are they all still USB1 or something?) I can't remember off the top of my head which ones do go higher, but there aren't many.

I'd not realised the Transit would go higher, actually; another reason to get mine out of the drawer and play with it again.

The Bel Canto one goes to 24/96 but it's not cheap...I'm guessing $400 so might be the same over here. I think BC have implmented this into the more recent DAC's....I've used the HagUSB one which as jobbo says is limited to 16/44, 16/48....USB in general seems to be out of favour in Computer Audio circles somewhat...

My Behringer USB device won't handle more than 48 kHz.

I have a few 24/88.2 files, but if I play them using direct sound drivers they are cut down to 44.1, and using the ASIO drivers they just won't play.

The M Audio Transit will handle up to 24/96 but only for playback - and there's a definite improvement in SQ, it uses their own ASIO drivers though not ASIO4ALL. I'm going to 'plumb' it back in to my system this weekend and go back to using an optical connection.

Downside of the transit is you have to change the bit rate for playback in the control panel if you flick between 24 and 16 bit files.

I understand you can set Foobar to upscale everything to 24 bit - so will have a play with that.

Apart from the USB - I'm extremely happy with the 7520 - am hearing detail on CD's I've played 100's of times and not noticed before.

    thanks C

Not yet theyhaven't. The DAC3 will only do 16/44 or 16/48 over USB
