Whatever you do, don't buy a Nait 3. Even hardcore Naimees think it's a piece of crap!

Hi mick
why do you want a Naim amplifier? I see in your profile that you a have a valve amplifier, Naim sound is a very different thing.
yes at the right price

Mick - The Naim One was OK, the 2 seen as the best of the bunch but can be difficult at low volumes, the 5i is a peach.

Good valves = nothing like naim, IME. If your valves sound like naim, send them back!
Neg Rep for sale - £10 a shot.

I\'m sat here listening to speakers designed in 1963. A hell of a lot of 'snake oil' must have been sold in the intervening years.
The Nait MK1 has a bit of a cult following. My own fav is the MK2 but it's not hugely different to the MK1. To be honest, you would be better off asking this on pfm.
Why do you ask the question, do you want to buy one? If yes, go ahead cause all Naits are good. If you dont like it you could probably sell it for more after a while!

BTW, mick,If you like Naim soundTheNaim Nait 5iwill beagreat choice, I had one and enjoyed it a lot.
Mick,
Note that the Nait 1 was a very low power amplifier - only about 10 watts per channel all in! It needs a benign speaker load to work well. None of these 4 ohm speakers please, otherwise it'll be good for background music only.
And it sounded great. Needless to say a Nait 1 is over 20 years old so if it hasn't been serviced, it will sound a bit tired by comparison to what it can do. Naim can still service it and bring it back to 'as new' sound quality.
The Nait 2 was a bit more powerful - more like 20 wpc. Some prefer the 2, some prefer the 1. If you should buy one of these, ensure you use Naim speaker cable, minimum 3.5m per side. The amps were designed with this in mind and can go into oscillation with a speaker cable of the wrong impedance characteristic.

Frank.

So....................it depends on a number of factors (of course critically speaker selection) my point is that Naim equipment is designed not for resolution (although quite often I'm amazed at the timbres that I get out of my system), nor for the best measured performance but for the experience it gives, rich rewarding and involving. Now the protaganists have said that Naim amps are cold and harsh - that has never been my experience the Nait 3 excepted - more the opposite and i'm not just talking the more expensive pre-power combinations the Nait 5i as has been said is a peach. In fact a little while ago I heard an Avid TT into I think an expensive Emile (?) and I'm sorry I'd give my 282/250 the nod anyday for musical enjoyment. Horses for courses.
And Mibby taken the oath I might but for the record I went to Norfolk this weekend not Salisbury and my shirt/tie combination today is a very nice hue of purple

firstly i love the sound of my valve amp,but a few years ago i had an exposure 7 pre amp and8 power amp.marantz 63 sig cd player and some tannoy m1s i think they were.anyway they were cheap speakers.my favorite piece of classical music is rachmaninov theme of paganini.when i play it on my system now its seems slow and not very exciting, but when i used to play it with my exposure amps it was thrilling and exciting made hair stand up on back of my neck.i suppose im looking for that again.exposure amps of that age seem to be going for a fourtune at the moment.that was why i asked about the naim nait.was thinking of spending bettween 2-300 quid
did you have the quads with the exposures.
i had a pair of the quads and found them laid back.
a change of amp might not sort it.
i would look at maybe small neats or epos es11 with densen naim or exposure.
or maybe a pair of small triangles with the fatman might be worth a try.
