Best broadband/phone package

I'm with Homecall/Pipex, who are starting to annoy me with dodgy billing and 15 minutes of holding to speak to Customer "Service"...

Any recommendations on a decent provider of up to 2mB broadband plus free anytime UK calls?

I'm not going to go VOIP phone yet, unless it's compatible with my new Panasonic phones..

I use them for broadband only and they have been faultless, and that includes a move of property.

Haven't used the phone service, but it's an 0800 number for sales enquiriesso maybe no harm in giving them a call.

I tracked them down using www.adslguide.org.uk and they fared very well in the ratings.

They are competitive on price but not the very, very cheapest. I also question what compromises there are with the very cheapest on the market.

I've been considering Nildram myself. I think you are dead right about the cheap players. Not to be trusted and already I have heard bad tales from other people. Nildram have a good reputation and seem to offer a good balance of price and faith in their ability and reliability.

How satisfying it is to be able to say to the cheapskates you previously warned,

"I told you so".

£22.99 including 500 minutes of free phone calls is quite reasonable, especially if they have customer service that actuall answers calls in less than 15 minutes!!!!

However, is there a problem with the 50gB monthly usage limit?

I don't tend to download films or music, but do anjoy abit of Youtube...

And how are Tiscali, as it's a lovely mountain?

The alternative to £22.99 is £15.99 which includes a 2.5 gb and then extra gb's are charged at a moderate amount, so you only pay extra for times when you happen to need a lot of downloads, which is not often for many.

£15.99 is rather good when you consider the quality of Nildram and the fact that 500 phone minutes are included ( thats proper phone minutes, not internet calls ).

I have broadband2go service from them at £15.99 a month with 2.5Gb download included, then pay extra if go over the 2.5Gb. But it's only another £2-3 for another 2.5Gb and I've never even got close. Admittedly I never download music or films, but watch the occasional video, quitea lot of YouTube and some internet radio.

With the broadband2go service you get the 500 minutes free. If you went with Nildram you could try the cheaper service, see how much you are downloading and then switch if it works out cheaper. Should be easy to do.

Additionally my Nildram package is monthly, so if it ever becomes uncompetitive you can jump ship easily instead of waiting to the end of the contract.

Sky Broadband is free (upto 8mb) if you have Sky TV, supplied by BT I think.....might be worth looking into. I'm getting it in about 2 weeks so will let you know.

I have a similar attitude to Murdoch since the infamous move down to Docklands of the printing presses....guess I'm a hypocrite but NTL is just not sustainable at the moment.
