Just coz you haven't got a huge room doesn't mean you can't have floor standers.

Stand mounts still need stands and there are some floor standers that don't kick the walls down at that price point.

The small rega R5's are very sweet and don't need huge volumes to work in. I am not saying there's owt rung with Stand mounts, but I am saying don't rule out floor standers on a preconception. Also you don't need to buy stands..

Rega R5, diminutive and very very musical

BTW: Epos make the best stand mounts per £ IMO

M12's available for £400.00 if you play it :dude::dude:

The Epos M12's really are the pups pods, dugs danglies, muts nuts and very fugging good at making music.

Also the Epos will do lovely HiFi AND kicking choons; they will make the Dyns look silly at a party.

    The Prisoner: "Who are you?"

    Number 2: "To you - Number 2."

The Prisoner: "Who is Number 1?"

Number 2: "You are number 6."

The Prisoner: "I am not a Number! I am a free man!"

I currently have floorstanders, Kef Q35.2, and do like them and am not against floorstanders. I think I am looking for standmounters as I could get better value for money and it gives me flexibility if I were to move out of home and to a flat.

I am going to hit the shops tomorrow, I think.

Find some Epos and check out Paragons PMC reccomendation.. The Dyns are wonderful but looking at your musical taste I would say something that rocks a little harder might just be the ticket.
Happy shopping matey, let us know what you go for eh.

    Cheers
    James.

    Thanks, everyone.

I will call dealers in the morning to arrange demos.

I think I'll look at at least Dynaudio Audience, PMC, Epos, ATC, and hopefully more!

One other thing I'm confused about...

Haved searched completed items on eBay...
...it seems that Audience sell for more than Contours, even though I though Contours were a range above.
Is this becuase the Contours are older? and if so, are newer speakers in a lower range better?

    Regards,

Sorry Phil. Forgot all about them ;)

They are a genuine bargain though. I used to have the Dyn 62s (floorstanding version of the 52s) and they went for a song when i sold them.

Forget the ATC SCM12. This is another very revealing loudspeaker but also a fairly inefficient one that needs an amp with bigger danglies than the Cyrus 7.

I'm not slating the CD72 or Cyrus 7 BTW. Both are excellent value for money but they are not high-end and speakers like the Contour 1.1, ProAc 1SC and SCM12 will reveal their shortcomings leading to a less than ideal result.

No offence taken, your comments are constructive!

I think the 52's are my best bet, I will go off for a listen when I can...

    Ok,

I have booked to hear the 52's at Movement Audio, 1pm; and then onto Suttons HiFi, 3pm for PMC TB2 and Spendor S3e.

Another delaer sells ProAc and Quad but as I've only just woken up I probably don't have enough time :-s

It's been a long day, so apologies for the non-HiFi language and non-structured review...

    Dynaudio Audience 52
    New £650; 2nd hand £300

    + Treble nice and smooth
    + Went loud
    - Low freq. cut-off obvious
    - Bass muddled and smudged lower male vocals

Conclusion: Nice, safe speaker but dull with dance and Miles Davis

    Dynaudio Audience 52SE

    New £950; Movement ex-dem offer £750

+ Benefits of 52's and were lively on tracks where the 52's were dull
    - Treble maybe too bright/brash?
    - Bass not tight enough for me
    - Expensive

Conclusion: An improvement on the 52's but maybe too forward.

    PMC TB2+

New price £850; Suttons offer with matching stands £950; Internet offer £481

    + Excellent low frequency response
    + Went very loud
+ Very clear without brash treble
    - After listening to the Spendors I found them maybe too forward
    - Possibly too revealing or exposing of system shortcomings

Conclusion: Great and probaly the best all-rounder, although I'd prefer them to be slighter smoother

    Spendor S3e
    ~£800

    + Very rich and sweet
+ Smooth treble but not dull
    + Weighty bass
    - Best at low volumes, cannot go loud

Conclusion: These were great, I just wish I could turn them up!!

    ---

Verdict: I'm keen for the PMCs, especially at the internet offer price, but having listened to the Spendors am concerned that I may have just been impressed by the PMCs forward character. I need to listen to more i.e. ProAc and anything else you suggest. I want something like the Spendors, but that can handle more power - and no, I can't afford S5e's!

Did you listen to the speakers with the cyrus 7 and cd72? Half my music is dance so i'm suprised about your comments.
You go for a walk in the park one day and wheelchair ninjas, Nazis, and pots and pans robots show up to kill you. And dinosaurs show up to eat the remains. You\'ve seen the news...?

Glad you liked the PMC's, the"forward" balance you refer to was something I noticed too, until I realised that this was just because they play everything as it was recorded, and hold nothing back, or add nothing either. However, you are doing the right thing by listening to a range of models,to find the one that suits you best. I will agree also about the PMC's being ruthless in revealing component weaknesses.

    Happy hunting !

THIS IS PARAGON BTW, NOT A.N.......DAMN COOKIES...LOL
