    Hi Folks

If I have US voltage 120v at 60hz device, which uses a switch mode PSU. Will a UK converter running at 50hz be fine?

    Regards

Worked it out. Switch mode power supplies are not that bothered about frequency change...

Careful... it depends. Some are designed for universal voltage and some ain't.

Most I've seen are Euro spec and will run on 110-120v with no problem. But I do have one here that's designed for the US market and has a max of 120v.

They're usually labelled, but they're cheap as chips anyway (and fucking awful) so if you're not certain, stick it in the garden on the end of a long extension lead and see whether it goes bang spectacularly when you turn it on.

Better still, sort out the actual voltage/current drain/termination of the unit and get a proper PSU for it. Switch-mode stuff is responsible for a hell of a lot of mains interference and it's an inherently nasty bit of work.
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realise that what you heard is not what I meant.

OK folks, thanks for your comments. What make of step down do you recommend? The power output is 120v 0.53a 60hz 30w. I looked at this.

It would perhaps be worth trying to find out if the unit is earthed - many of these small low cost units aren't

    This supplier is often recommended.
