    Bombproof speakers

After spending quite a lot on my turntable with much help from here (many thanks), my focal tweeters have just died again which is the second time in eighteen months. Now at three hundred pounds a pop it is getting expensive. I like the sound of my Focal 936's but can anyone suggest an alternative, floor or stand mount, but which must like to be driven hard. As they are in a large room which takes a bit of filling. I had thought of ATC or PMC, but is there anything else which are a little more subtle.

That's odd - never heard many stories about focal tweeters being particularly fragile.
Perhaps it's the amplifier which does not have the required umph for the big room ?

    Best regards

Can be a sympton, of the amp clipping... but that can depend on other factors imo
Oh well, the season's over, it was fun while it lasted....

I'm also inclined to think that the problem is not the tweeters but somewhere else. I have Focal Electra 920's and drive quite a large room and have never had a problem.

what amp are you using? ....

if you want good older speakers that will blow the roof off, get a pair of old Celestion Ditton 66's ... a good pair can be bought for between 600-800 ... add a decent amp with a bit of grunt (like a musical fidelity A5 integrated for approx 800 - these are 250 watts @ 8 ohms) ....

and your neighbour's neighbours will be complaining

Did you send the tweeters back to Focal for assessment cos something's not quite right . They can tell you if you fried them and then you know that what you think is driven hard is actually damaging them.

First set was found to be fried, second set will be despatched tomorrow, as for amplifier lacking power, it is a baby krell integrated so it is barely ticking over. Focal are saying to loud for to long which possibly is true, as my room is a little larger than average and my wife likes her dance music at realistic volumes which doesn't help. When the tweeters died today the 300il was barely over half it's volume range. The only good news is that focal are doing a deal on the tweeters so it is only going to cost a little over the ton.

If you mean that the volume is at 12 o'clock well on my system that would blow your socks off. Too loud.

While I think of it, I had no problems with my previous speakers which were KEF 104/2 which were retired when the base units surrounds died.

It depends on how LOUD you want to go and with what music...

For rock, JBL L150 or L250 (the JBL top end can be a little hard), Dynaudio 3.0 or PMC MB2
For dance/techno stuff, Revel Salon or Studio, Tannoy DMT215 (play some Prodigy with the 215's at 50% volume, yeah!)

You're tweeters frying could be your cartridge mistracking and producing distortion. I don't think the Krell integrated (150W per channel) would clip at 50% volume, unless it's not working correctly. I would get the amp checked out too.

The old Ditton 66's don't cut it in my world, big but they don't like it LOUD.

The Krell is checking out fine, just put it on a scope on it whilst driving some old Pro-Ac's, mains are the next thing I am going to have a look at but I suspect it is too loud for too long. The other problem I have just cured is my Linn DS cracking between tracks which can't have done them much good. I was toying with going fully active or down the studio monitor route, DMT 215 look nice but not that common and not the cheapest, though I haven't looked at JBL's . To answer the other question, yes I like my music at proper levels and yes my hearing is pretty good as it get checked yearly with my job.

Hmmmm ... you obviously have not heard a pair then... I have ... these will smash windows if connected to a decent powerfull amp like a Bryston ... I have also owned IMF TLS80, but if you want to go loud, Ditton 66 are the ones
