    Searching for silver cable.

I've recently made a short interconnect out of 22awg solid core pure silver wire and like the results. I now want to do the same with my speaker cable as I've moved my system so my old cable is too short. After smurfing the net, I've decided I want to try 16awg solid core pure silver wire. I just can't seem to find it in the UK. There's a place in the US, but I think it would be too much hassle after all the sales tax, import, income tax etc etc. Does anyone know where it can be purchased over here? This is going to be costly as I will need two runs of 7m & may then rewire my speakers as well which will need at least another 3m per speaker.

    Rick,

I have used wires.co.uk in the past and got good service from them.

    Best of luck.

I use the 0.5mm Soft Fine Silver Wire 99.99% from wires.co.uk for most of my wiring, in teflon tubing from RS. I copied some design recipes from hificollective for the layouts.
    I like it.

What seems like an age ago I bought 100m of 0.5mm 99.99 silver wire with the intention of making some speaker cable, but then got side tracked and have just been trying to find some suitable Teflon / plastic tubing for it. Not had a lot of luck and just tried RS, but can not find anything appropriate . Could someone please post a link to some tubing which would be suitable for this width of wire?
    Cheers, Dave

B&Q do a range of plastic tubing of various diameters for ponds etc or your local aquarium/tropical fish vendor.

Use a heavy bodkin/darning needle on cotton as a pull through. Made some 7/10m I/C's this way.

I used RS part no. 404-522 "Clear PTFE 5m Sleeve, 0.89mm bore" but it appears to be out of stock at the moment.

That would explain why I couldn't find the tubing at RS. Never thought of going to B&Q, cheers.
As I only need the speaker cable to be 3m I was hoping to just be able to push the wire through the tubing, guess I will find out if I ever find some tubing .
As a slight aside, for each speaker I was intending on making eight, 3m lengths of wire and braiding these together so that I have four strands going to each channel of the speaker (guess I will need some jumpers as well). By my calculations, this means I should need ~50m of wire. Does this set-up sound sensible, or would you / anyone suggest some thing else?

I made mine using this recipe with the RS tubing and 0.5mm silver wire from wires.co.uk. I think you'll find that 3m is about the limit for single lengths of the sleeving before the wire gets too hard to push without kinking, for my 5m long leads I had to cut the tubing into roughly half, then join with heatshrink. You might want to finsih them with some nice outer braid and heatshrink... I used some cheap plastic expandable sleeving (from RS) but it does look and feel cheap.. I might re-cover mine one day to improve the looks and the foo-ness=)

I made a pair for my brother too using the same layout, but included soldered on jumpers at one end.

    Edit to add:
Just had a quick look on RS and they have the 1.0mm ptfe tubing in stock, part no. 404-512
I haven't tried this diameter tubing, so no idea if it's easier or harder to use...

Thanks for the link, this is kind of what I had in mind, but using six strands instead of the eight. Very useful to see the pictures though, Using that wooden clamp method is a lot better than what I was going to try . I don't know if what I end up making will be better that the Kimber 8TC which I am using at the moment, I guess there is only one way to find out .
