Turntable platter cleaning/polishing

Hi All. I have a Roksan Xerxes inner and outer platter which, though in good general condition, has developed quite a few smudges, light marks and abrasions over the years. Anyone have any advice about how to polish it (esp. the outer plater) up nicely? Platter is mirrored finish aluminium alloy. I have tried the obvious household cleaners, eg Mr Sheen, which gets rid of finger prints and dust but not more stubborn marks. Read up on other polishes but am a little hesitant to go down the Halfords road without prior feedback. Cheers.

I have used SOLVOL AUTOSOL on Thorens Platters and they come up a treat. But the platter will always discolour as there is no sealer on it!
Aluminium will oxidise over time.

Thanks. I'll put that on my shortlist. I guess you have to re-apply fairly regularly once you go down that road? Browsing the bikers' forums, Autosol is maybe more abrasive than Meguirs metal cleaner. Halfords have both. I'm guessing that non abrasive cleaners may not get all the marks out (Roksan recommended Pledge and apparently used it in the last service, but I'll be damned if I can see any difference aside from fewer finger prints) while abrasive polishes (Autosol) will get the marks out, but maybe at some cost to the finish? So there's probably a trade off. The platter is in quite good nick but I've just upgraded the turntable and it is quite annoying to see an old platter on an otherwise brand new deck.

I use Isopropyl alcohol to good effect on the inner platter and pulley and standard non-abrasive car polish on the outer platter [on my LP12].

Thanks. Isopropryl plus cotton buds sounds good for the inner platter (also only 3.99 from Amazon, it seems) I'll give that a go. Any preferences on the polish. I'm leaning to Meguir's or Autosol as the local Halfords have both in stock. Still slightly nervous about this, though.

Not too keen on abrasive polish myself. I'd see how you get on with non-abrasive first. I use Autoglym Super Resin Polish on the car and my platter.

Autosol is highly abrasive. Brasso is less so, and works fine, certainly on Thorens type platters.

Something like this. Its non abrasive. I use it on my cooking pots.

Thanks! The Peter Cook in me fancies a go at the Brasso; but I'll take a look at the stainless steele reviver as well. Esk: have you used this to good effect on your Xerxes? It's the same platter as I'm using more or less.

Yes its fine. Sparkly clean. You apply it with a just damp sponge; rub it in; wipe it off and buff dry.

Get yourself some of those white cotton gloves to dry/buff the platter to avoid getting your greasy mits on it after its cleaned.

That's good enough for me. No more bumping now until I have tried this method and can report back with a 'before and after', hopefully with pics. Cheers / Ed

I used brasso on my old Techys platter and it worked a treat.

I used a thing called 'Peek' metal polish to buff up some metal work. Worked a treat
