Agree, i'm monitoring fuel usage like a hawk at the moment. As a result I'm managing to offset some of the recentish price hikes, averaged 50.4mpg on my last tank. Not bad considering i'm driving around Oxford each day / zero motorway. Well worth not braking.

switch your cars inboard computer to show 'momentary fuel consumption' if it has such a thing. The toyota swings from 9mpg (hard uphill acceleration) to 89.9 (6th gear downhill, foot off the pedal)...currently got up to 50.1 average by avoiding the former.

bloody thread nearly died, so now sold the damned toyota (life IS too short for a Toyota, in case anyone was wondering....mind to be fair, the new one has apparently risen to the dizzy heights of 'quite interesting')
and now bought yet another merc.
'08 280 CDi Elegance estate auto in a sort of amazing red which looks dark in the shade but goes all sparkly burnt orange in the sun.......apologies for slipping into solid speak there....came over all damp.

Good: Build back to W124 standard or near. Huge inside. Comfy and quiet natch. Plenty of torque. That colour. Saved £28,000 over new price.
Bad: Running costs going up. slow speed ride not quite as bump free as you might want.

Exciting 'driving along quite slowly in a big merc estate trying to creep the MPG over 35 average' type report to follow.

Not bad at all, my 150hp petrol passat which weighs about the same is currently getting 19mpg average. Driving like a learner driver too :/

more heart racing excitement, as we manage to 'down' the fuel consumption to a new record 39.6 measured over 423miles.

To set the mood, we left after a good breakfast of all bran and weak tea, ate our packed egg sandwiches ( a little salt and pepper) in the drizzle at the ridgeway, and stopped again for flask tea and a digestive just outside wellingborough Tesco's. I once exceeded 70mph, but R steadfastly stuck to 68 on the motorway and 52 everywhere else (including towns and villages, startling several old ladies and a flock of ducks).

An experience I look forward to bettering.

That's pretty impressive fuel economy John. We run a 55 plate Merc estate (220cdi Avent Garde) and around here (hilly) with a fair few short trips thrown in, the average is around 35mpg. On a long run, the best we saw was 50mpg over 220 miles (staying under the magic 70 mph figure). Its an auto which doesnt help. Its now gone round the clock and still feels factory fresh and drives like new. Haven't tried a later Merc, but these W203 motors seem pretty bullet proof.

I also run a 185BHP S60D5. That averages 36mpg around here with 50mpg on a run. Not bad for a large and very nippy 2.4l lump. That's auto too (I don't trust any of the DMF shod diesels these days...forking out £1K for a clutch and new flywheel when they eventually DO disintegrate doesn't appeal).
