So, dear Devialet owners - how are you getting on with the new iDevice app?

Is it designed for iPhone and iPad, or is it an iPhone app that gets scaled up on the iPad screen?

I presume you can control the amp (volume, input selection), and maybe even queue up tunes via Devialet Air?

Enquiring minds want to know.

It parallels the supplied remote plus the circular display on the amp, which means you don't need to see the amp.
Works well.
Has no link to any computer you may be streaming from, just to the D-Premier(s)

I prefer the remote itself, an ergonomic joy and my main reason for trying one out at first...honest. Though the unique topology interested me too.

It cannot turn the Devialet on though, so you still need to use the actual remote before using the app

Right, thanks for the info. It was always a bit peculiar that you couldn't see the display when seated (unless the amp is on the wall). Then again as you say the remote is a beautiful object to touch and use.

Not a technical bod myself but the circuit that seems vaguely similar to me is David Berning's ZOTL which also uses a class a device (in this case valves) to create high current low voltage and a switching device to create the current required by the loudspeakers.

Sort of, although crossed with a Quad current-dumper, and the ill-fated Wadia power DAC. It's the power DAC part that's really interesting.

The NAD is as much a trickle down of its big digital amp model, rather than looking at the D-Premier and thinking 'me too'.

The price of admission is high and it is a complex bit of kit, but I've yet to meet someone who said - from an engineering standpoint - that it's overpriced for what you get. It would be good for Devialet to come up with a good-better-best strategy (perhaps setting the D-Premier as 'better' and making one at half the price and at one at three times the price), but it's currently still doing strong business in almost every region apart from the US (it's too small, too cheap and too French for them).

Anything newer needs an Ethernet hole IMO. For firmware upgrades and streaming. Just MO. Still a beautiful and terrifically clever piece of kit.

Absolute Sounds have decided to drop the price of the D Premier from £11199 to £10450 due to the low euro at the present time anyone who might interested in buy one should do sooner rather than later....

hardly dude. none of the things I own look like "a sack of spanners".

the fact that they had a pretentious "celebrity launch" in their cheesy boutique really sums up that tier of the hobby nicely.

as for looks? I find it hideous. the shiny chrome to me is extremely tacky.

I did find the comment that 10 grand as "great value" hilarious. it just isn't. But the type of people who buy that stuff probably dont give a shit about "value" anyway.

the gear BigDur sells is a great value. Rega is a great value. NAD..great value.

I doubt very much if you have clue how much it costs to research, design, engineer, prototype and actually physically build audio kit. I have, in a tiny basic way, done so, and the costs are scary nowadays. There is no economy of scale with equipment like this and customers expect an exceptional build quality and finish and huge functionality.

You may choose to disbelieve it, but Jack was right - for all that it is, and all that it can do, it is actually fairly priced in any context. In its market sector it's rather a bargain!

You've gone out an Got A Life - and now hifi has a more proportionate place in your life - which is great and I'm genuinely happy for you - but this doesn't overnight turn you into the Prophet of Sanity here to save us all from our sins of conspicuous consumption: it's just a hobby, not a belief system, we all know it's not the greatest possible value for money, but we buy with our eyes open knowing this, so please don't patronise an entire forum with your newfound enlightenment. We've seen it all before
