Of course, having horn sub-woofers helps a lot here, that way you get the full effect! But you do need a very large room. I do think you could get 90% of the way there with just the folded horns. Obviously you won't get as much bass, but the sense of presence will be there.

He's the system I use:

Bass: Conical 70Hz horn (ok, so they need a sub-woofer) with Vitavox AK-151 15" woofer.

Mid: Vitavox S2 on CN-157 dispersive horns (these ring a bit, so I'd expect the wooden Definitive ones to be better, but again, I woud expect a tractrix or LeCleac'h horn to be even better for the mid-range)

Treble: JBL 2405

All these components are available (with a bit of searching) and would most likely not break the bank (I reckon you could get all the drive units for <£2k). Some woodwork and fine tuning and well...

Ok, so the Kondo is a huge price, but again I reckon a decent valve amp and some horns will get you a long way down the road. Anyway, let's put it like this, my horns may look shit, but I ain't going back to conventional speakers.

The effortless shifting of air as you say is remarkable, and I can now honestly say I understand where you Horn lovers are coming from. Kevin did run them without the bass bins briefly, and of course the wall of sound shrunk but if I had heard them on their own first then I would still have been very very impressed, and in fact I was, its just the full monty setup is in another world all together

Yeah, it's just a shame they have to be so big. Sadly, getting around the laws of physics is not an option yet. It's definitely not fair.

The size is a problem, im just looking at where my IBXs are sitting right now but no matter how much I try to kid myself they wouldnt fit, not without taking out the kitchen

Mind you, I think Kitchens are overated!!

Superb write-up Hawk, it's got me thinking if I brick up the windows and put wadding on all the internalwalls, open-out the back and geta decent driver in the front, then I could sit outside my horn-loaded house and get a pretty decent rendering of some old mono faves

Would take some saving and evicting my neighbours before I could go stereo though! :lmao:

As JJ says Kevin is a decent chap and suprisingly perhaps a large chunk of Definitive's business is at the more affordable end.
