plus or minus?
have just got the x-overs done and the drivers into my O baffle project im wondering how to tell if the connections are plus or minus on the drivers.
the old JBL bass drivers are easy they have black and red terminals. the skytronic full rangers and the emminence beta bass drivers have a twin terminal but no + or - on them.( i have a loan of JBL and emminece bass drivers to try with my full range)
is there a rule ( left or right terminal is + or - ) or wont it matter which one i use. i have terminals on the x over board where the LF and HF + go and a single point where the - all go together from the both drivers. how will i know which ones are the -
hope that makes sence
Is one terminal point thicker than the other, if so that's usually positive. or you can use a 9v battery to check, when you attach it to the correct way round the cone will push forward.
Thanks i will check the terminals but im sure they are the same. if using the battery do i connect the plus on the battery to the speaker terminals one by one then if it moves thats the plus terminal, what do i do with the - terminal on the battery? sorry if this is thick but i know jack about this
You need to complete the circuit for the battery to have any effect. Connect the + pole of the battery to one terminal, and the - pole of the battery to the other. Watch which direction the cone moves. The + 'speaker terminal is the one that makes the cone move outwards when attached to the battery + terminal.
Use a 1.5 volt battery as anything more could damage the 'speaker's suspension.
Also, don't do this with tweeters. For tweeters, you'll need to do it by listening. Put a 1uF capacitor in series with the tweeter, then use the tweeter as a loudspeaker on the right channel, say, with another single driver of known polarity on the other channel. Keeping the volume low, listen to a stereo programme. Switch the connections to the tweeter, and the way round that gives a stereo effect (of sorts, it won't be HiFi) is the in-phase connection relative to the known 'speaker on the other channel.
thanks guys the terminals were marked ok but really hard to see so all up and running
