oh...one question, because at some point it may arise....is ANY amount of photoshop trickery allowed, or are we talking images straight from the camera?

Yea, any amount you like - just mention it when you publish the pics - it's not a competition, just a bit of fun with some constructive critisism from fellow photogs. Post production work is entirely ok and could even form a major part of the style you are presenting.

Stup alerted me to the fact that there is such a thing as a variable Neutral density filter, many thanks. They lend themselves to motion blur shots, car lights, waterfalls stars etc- I have just ordered one from Amazon
There are some for as little a tenner.
