I ran a CX for a couple of years - surprisingly painless. You are screwed if the hydropneumatic suspension breaks, mind.

I used to think 911s were sporty, until I drove an Elise.
I agree with mibby, there's no way a 5 series is sporty. Way to heavy to be called a sports car, even an M5 is a lardy thing. Try taking one round the ring and you'll see what I mean. It's like wrestling an angry pig.

In the endless battle between theory and reality, reality has yet to lose.
Coco-san speaketh the truth. Back when exec barges were 1,300-1,400 kgs and closer to 4.5 than 5 metres, claims of them being a 'sports saloon' could be taken halfway seriously in some cases. Now they're as large and heavy as your average 1970s American land yacht, no chance in h*ll...
I used to think Elise's were sporty until I drove a Caterham...
Most sporty Beemers currently in production: 1 Series M Coupe, Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works.

Modern cars seem to be aping modern people, constantly getting heavier. There's no way a car of this weight, fitted with any engine, can be considered sporty, it would have to defy physics for it to happen.
One of the most "sporty" cars I've driven, believe it or not, was a bog standard 1.1 106, incredible feedback through the unassisted steering, amazing ability to control the cornering line with the throttle (lift-off oversteer in abundance) and just a ridiculous ability to carry corner speed, I used to be able to keep up with all manner of things simply because they were having to scrub so much speed off on every corner. Sadly I tried the 16v Saxo version and didn't like it, the power steering just sapped all feedback and massively reduced cornering confidence, yes it was about 5 times as fast but I found it 10 times less fun.
Engine's in the same place, too. You'd have thought they'd fix that cockup.

A two litre diesel van with windows possibly laden with four lard arses. What do you expect, how would your Passat perform similarly laden?
