    Hi guys,

Just wanted to thank you all. I havent really posted here much in the past but I've been a keen reader for a goodfew months and thanks to all your experience, enthusiasmand many many informative posts - not to mention your willingness to sell me good kit via the classifieds- I've got to where I want to be with my hi-fi.

I wont give a full review just yet - just a quick summary. When I 1st startedhere I had:

    Arcam FMJ A22
    Marantz CD7300
    Rogers LS7t

    Now I have got:

    MF A308
    Exposure 2010s CD player
    Dynaudio 1.8MK II
    No money ;)

Apart from the no money bit I am chuffed to bits. To my ears the hi-fi is sounding absolutely fantastic. Powerful, room-filling, controlled, rythmic, detailedand above all fun to listen to.

I only got the amp this evening but when I've had a bit more time to listen I shall (try to) post a more "hi-fi" review of it.

    Thanks Keith

I did yeh. Both great blokes to deal with - very helpful. Mick brought it over to me last night. I thought my Arcam was fairly solid but the 1st thing I thought when I got the MF out of the box was f*ck me this is heavy! It's built like a tank It's not the most "stylish" or sleek design lol butit definately looks like it means business sat on the rack.

I saw you were interested in it for the future - when another one comes up I'd recommendyou to gofor it. I dont think you'd regret it.

100% They sound a hell of a lot more dynamic andlike the big speakers they are now. The Arcamgave the impression of big speakers connected to a small hi-fi. Although I think the big speakers/small hi-fi effectwas as much if not more to do with the Arcams character than its lower power output.

I expected the MF to sound more powerful and dynamic and I'm really glad it does cos that was important to me.What I'm really pleased about is that the MF is better (to me) than the Arcam in every way.

The tonal balance is a lot more even from top to bottom. The Arcam put a lotmore of its own character into the sound - which is fair enough if its the sound you want - but for me it wasnt perfect - I liked it butI found itrather bright and thin. The MF has more warmth to it but without sounding thick or shut in. Vocals and the midrange for example are still naturaland open. When I 1st heard the added warmth I wasnt sure if it could rock but it does It can play gentle acoustic music really well and it can rock with great rhythm and drive in the bass and drums whilst stillbringing guitars to life. The Arcam did the guitars well but the rhythm section was too far back and the treble a bit too far forward. The MF is more natural AND more fun than the Arcam.

It's amore detailed amp with better seperation of intruments through the midrange and the treble is clean and never harsh. I played the Faithless Greatest Hits cd last night, which I think is well recorded and a good test of any hi-fi. Ithas so many layers of sound and with the MF I heard many things I havent heard before. It let me hear and follow so much without pulling the sound to pieces. It was whole and together with a massive soundstage which Ifoundquite breathtaking. It wasnt even on that loud but it was fun and involving.

The bass from the Dyns with the MF is superb - really tight fast andtuneful.Powerful but not over powering. It also has great texture and timbre. With rock the character of2 differentbass guitars for example is very clearly portrayed.

Overall I'm chuffed to bits and I'm happy to say the MF is in a totally different class to my Arcam. I know they could probably stand an even better amp but that isnt gonna happen for a long long time. I feel I am giving the speakers an amp that does them justice. The Arcam is still good tho - sosomeone buy it pls

I could go on and on and I probably will another time- but I'm starving hungry so I'm gonna eat now.

PS: I'm starting to feel like part of the club here now

    Good write up.

Yeh, I like their sound but wonder if better sound per pound could be found in other ways. For example, as a really general generalisation... £1k Dyns with a £2k amp, or £1.5k amp and speakers

I'm a Dynadude though, so other brands don't do much for me

Would be interested to know what you think of the A308 into the Rogers (before they go!).
Mine responded very well to amp upgrades over the years.

Well done chap, that seems like a bloody good system you have put together

    I'm jealous

I'd echo what Earl said; get the hell away from the 2 channel debate and classifieds forums and stick to the public bar ;)

Why are MF so hated around here by so many people? Is it just their newer products or do people dislike slighty older stuff like my A308 integrated too? I guess I'd be a bit pissed off if I bought an amp for £2000 new then MF brought a new one out 6 months later for £1500 and said it's better because it decreases the resale value, but at least if you buy MF 2nd hand you get a good deal - I think(?). Is it the products the company or both people object too?

They seemed to be re-boxing old kit as new, then telling every one it was the best thing they ever made. This went on for a while and explains the animosity. People would buy the latest amp, then 3 months later be told that there was a new one and it was much better than the last.

They just pissed a lot of people off with this. However, people do understand that MF make some very decent kit.

Having lived with the system a bit longer I think it sounds great in almost every way... but I am finding the bass a touch on the lean side. The deep bass is fine. If I play Massive Attack it really is massive. With rock music though I find the bass guitars are sometimes lacking - too far back in the mix. So maybe I might change the amp

What do you guys think of the Krell KAV 300i?

Perfection is close - I can sense it.
