Rigoletto live from Covent Garden on now. This service is priceless. The stage mics are a bit phasey and John Eliot Gardiner is not an obvious Verdian but Jeez this is costing nothing at the point of use and it's superlative. This is what Murdoch is attempting to take down.

[QUOTE=Valvebloke;1241732]Yup, I'm a big fan. When I get the chance Late Junction is one of my favourites. There's simply nothing else like it that's easily accessibl
Would agree with all these choices and would add the excellent private passions and of course the proms .What i do find strange is that i love choral evensong even though i am a total non beliver
I thought this was pretty good. Hearing it on the radio also had the advantage of not having David McVicar's staging thrust (I use the term advisably) into your lap! I've seen some productions of his which I thought were great but this is not one of his better efforts.

I saw a shocker of a staging at the Komische in Berlin a few months ago, fortunately the singing and playing were first rate.

I'm quite happy with modern productions (Danielle de Niese as Cleopatra in a Bikini is fine by me) but that does look ... interesting!
The only time I've been to the Komische was to see Love of Three Oranges which I thought was an excellent production, a real ensemble at work. It's a lovely theatre too.
I thoroughly enjoyed this revival of the McVicar production. John Elliott Garner may not be an obvious verdian but i think he's a damn good one. But the real prize goes to Lucy Crowe- an incredible stand in.
I hope this is on the Iplayer, because if it is I shall be listening tonight.
[edit I see it is on the iPlayer but with Siurina- for whom Crowe stood in. It will be interesting to compare but i would be surprised if Siurina was as good.]

Shall endeavour to listen more to FM BBC Radio Third programme.
'Sometimes via the senses, mostly in the mind' (or pocket)...
Boheme next Saturday, not to be missed!
Rudolpho has a regrettable vibrato, reminiscent of a machine gun in places.
Almost put on R3 FM yesterday p.m., but sister-in-law visited playing her woodwinds.
Ideally, the now-dreadful R1 would be abolished/R3 put on instead of that/most radio things bar R4/World Service.

Composer of the week this week (Paganini) has been particularly good imho (I've even sneaked a radio into work to make sure I catch it). Has been really interesting - there I was thinking of Paganini only for the caprices... Shame on me![]()
I learned a lot of new (to me) music from R3 in the early 70s. There was a live broadcast at 7.30 most evenings. I recorded all of them onto cassette and listened to them in the car. I have always found my most enjoyed music to need several listens to begin to appreciate - how did people cope before recordings where one may only hear a piece once in a lifetime - we are very lucky.
If I liked the piece I broke the record tags out of the cassette, if not I used the tape again. I lived within sight of the Holme Moss transmitter and got great reception. The live broadcasts were victim of earlier cuts decades ago but I still have the tapes and still listen to R3.
The review programme is available as a podcast BTW, so one can keep it.
If there is a clearly audible difference which does not show up in your measurements, you are measuring the wrong parameters.
