Oxfam : vinyl record prices to make the mind focused !

Whilst looking for a book via Google I stumbled across this Oxfam shop , their book is £25 2nd hand , brand new it is £9.80 !

Anyway , I decided to check out their vinyl & my jaw dropped I have to say unless I'm missing something !

    Led Zep £160 :

When I used to buy records, before my flat disappeared with sheer volume, I shopped in Macclesfield occasionally - they have a vinyl expert at the Oxfam in Macclesfield, have to say he knows his music with write ups on the front of each album so you can guarantee he's cherry picking the best stuff for himself, its well expensive now rendering any bargains impossible unless you like the Humperdink or Peters and Lee!
"Before you play two notes learn how to play one note - and don't play one note unless you've got a reason to play it."

Its funny when your local record emporium, sells pristine versions of the scratched Oxfam shite, at 2/3rds the price! I would rather give charity to the bloke that sells me my quality vinyl.

I don't bother with Oxfam at all these days for records. UI used to buy 20 or 30 for £40 or so and walk away happy with a few good uns. But these days even the shite is priced at £3 or £4. I assume they are making more money pricing this way, they have been at it for over 5 years now. I would rather go to a record dealer and know they have been graded correctly....you can still get good buys at record dealers when they have a clearout.

If Oxfam can sell the black stuff at those prices which they must do good luck to them. I buy a lot of books from them at around half price.

But does it sell? I still buy good condition vinyl in other charity shops £1 each, or 7 for £5.

I'm not crazy, my reality is just different to yours.............................

Maybe I will ask the staff at our local shop next time I am there. I have in the past paid more than the asking price in other charity shops because the records were badly underpriced.

I think Oxfam's prices lost touch with reality a long time ago, and in general I have given up buying from them unless I find something that is in good condition / price.

But I did find a good first pressing of Scott 4 in an Oxfam for £2.99 recently so maybe that might make up for all the overpriced crap they usually try to sell.

I have to say I have bought quite a few (classical) records from my local Oxfam, in Oxford, all reasonably priced and in good nick.

I bought some discs from West Bridgford store, mostly £2.99 each and in better condition than a dealer in Nottingham, we all have the choice……..

I was shocked by a Yes triple fold (gatefold) live album for £60 (in Nottingham actually but not W Bridgford).

I often take records in and their eyes immediately have those cartoon dollar signs in them. I've seen some more expensive records on display in the window but never at the prices mentioned here. Who would give records of that value away?

    Charity shops...to high?

I dont shop @ Oxfam out of principle, all the money seems to go to African states with zero tolerance to their peoples, prefer Cancer,Hospice and Heart shops
least you know its going to somewhere worthwhile,
Had a ( few} bargains at such places. another factor is record dealers who, after scouring boot sales, pay some shops to keep all the records back for them to pick and choose.
Got bigger bargains on ebay and the occasional audio fair, grabbed a box full of pristine Ventures albums once for not alot, though as guilty as charged for paying too much(Nat King Cole@£50 anyone?) though i saw a 180g pressing of George Michael's 'Faith' album @ the Bristol SAV show for over £100 as i was handing over
£45 for a Bonnie Raitt album reckon it was worth it for the cover

At least with pristine, sealed 180g stuff your getting top quality for your money

I no longer go into Oxfam either cos of their high prices. I was told that they have valuation 'experts' (probably a bloke with a record collector price book) who travel around shops dictating these price tags, and they rotate the stock around different shps as well. I have asked whether they'd shift on the price but the older dears who work there don't seem empowered to do that.

I think it's daft - reasonable prices = better turnover I would have thought. They could save money by not employing these extra people to drive around the countryside trying to squeeze more cash out. I resent it so much that when I have bits and bobs to shift then I wouldn't consider giving it to Oxfam - there are plenty of other charity shops that seem to have a more better attitude.

Most Oxfams just value by looking at the internet - ie ebay BIN prices, which are overpriced. But the worst thing is that they seem to price records in any condition according to NM internet prices. However there are certain Oxfams that have classical boxes with records at a pound each, and I've had some good finds. I really regret Oxfams current policies because I used to give a lot of records to them but now I just don't enjoy the way they treat the record exchange market. There has to a bit of fun with charity shops; the possibility of a bit of a bargain. You do get that with the British Heart Foundation Book and Record shops, but there are very few of those.
