Hi everyone. Just wondered if anyone has any recommendations for any AV receivers under £400? Interested in the Onkyo TX-NR414, but wondered if it's any good from peoples' own opinions? Is the streaming any good?
Thanks for looking!

Do you need HDMI/3D pass through?
If you don't need 3D I would suggest you buy second hand. You will get much more bang for your money. Do you just want it for movies or also to listen to music (as this will affect the choice too).
I'd tread carefully with the Onkyos - many have had HDMI/video switching issues in the past. They can also sound bright/agressive - epsecially when turned up!
I'd look for an older Denon if you need HDMI switching - the 23xx series are very good and they also have pre-outs to bolt on additional power amps. if you don't need HDMI, I'd look into Arcam - music performance is top-notch with these.
Sony RCD-W100/MDS-JB980JE480/RDR-HXD560/PS3 Slim 250GB, Denon AVR-2308/TU-1800, Rega P1, Arcam DiVA DV79/FMJ A18/rDAC, Pioneer BDP-140, Ultramatch Pro, Mac Mini, Wharfedale Diamond 10.3/10CM/10.0/10MX, Samsung UE40D5520
Yamaha 3900 (2nd hand)
Sony ES ones 2nd hand (2400ES upwards). Got one and its brilliant.
Had a Yamaha before. Also excellent.
Have and still use an Onkyo TX-SR605 and have nothing but good things to say about it. For mainly TV or Films it has enough inputs and sounds excellent . It is okay on music but as I have a full music set in another room I do not use for that too often. These go for around £100 - £200 second hand . If you need it the NR versions are very similar but add a Netwroking facility as well .
Later models add in 3d through etc but will cost that but more. Would also say that a good Denon high end unit but older will perform very well .

I had Yamahas and Sonys and never impressed. In fact I replaced a £600 Sony with a budget Cambridge Audio and it was in a different league (and I'm from the school that all amps sound basically the same). I tried out a newer (but used) Yamaha a few months ago since I wanted HDMI, but the sound wasn't a patch on the CA.
Since then I have acquired a used Marantz SR6004 and it is excellent. Marantz are not big players in AV - their equipment not so flash so perhaps not as marketable - but as you will see from the reviews and other owners it is extremely highly rated. I got mine for about £220 and I’m not sure that there really is anything at 4 times the price that would sound any better.
I agree - with checking out what is available locally new/guaranteed that does what you want. Enjoy. It is not necessary to overspend.

Brand new onkyo 609's can be had for £300 now. Excellent amplifier, loads of features and sounds really nice. I think some of the previous generation Onkyo's could sound a little harsh. The 609 wiped the board last year with awards!!
Yamaha HTR-3063 (discontinued)
My Onkyo has just gone back for repair due to exactly the problem mentioned.
Marantz SR5005 can be picked up new for € 399 in Belgium or Holland. Total steal! Pure direct mode is also excellent with this unit!
Another thumbs up for the Marantz units, so much more grown up sounding than many others.
I have been using an NR1602 for the last few months with some B&W XT speakers, the aluminium ones, and have been thoroughly impressed by it, even more so when you consider how compact it is.
Nice sound that always sounds detailed but never shrill.
To put it into perspective it replaced a Meridian G68, DSP5200s across the front and DSP33's on the rear.
The little Marantz held its own! Certainly so when you consider it retails for £599 and the Meridian pre was £5500. haha
We are converting the room that it is in into a new baedroom for my son, and I am trying to work out where I can stick it!
