Be just and if you can't be just, be arbitrary- William S. Burroughs
Having slept on it I have to say this was amongst the more perfect gigs I've been to. I wasn't pissed or otherwise either ! I love all sorts of music as we all do but there's something about the stripped down to the par 'one bloke and a guitar' performance.
I retract what I said about rather being at the more earthy Rock City, a seated 'nice' venue with decent acoustics really suited the evening. It was as I mentioned above intense, but also humour was in there too and he chose to deliver a set of his more popular stuff with only 2 or 3 obscurities I didn't recognise.
He opened with Sweet Carolina which surprised me. Maybe he sees this as something he just wants to get out the way as it carries a weight of expectation. It was beautiful.
He came on stage carrying a mug of tea/coffee, perhaps a statement there, or perhaps he just fancied a brew.
He moved about the stage a bit, performing from centre sitting, left at the keyboard and then to the right standing. Not a precise quote but something like "I like to deliver depressing songs from all over the stage. Here's another bucket full of sunshine...."
Not a review, just a few thoughts. We bought a bag of wine gums at the gig - rock on kids.
Cleanliness is next to Quadliness.
so glad RyRy is well. When he isnt batshit crazy, he is hard to beat!

Very jealous of all of you; was listening to his version of Wonderwall last night and it really does make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

tottally agree guys pleased you all have the same views of the tour , for me there is still something genius about his tormented years heartbreaker for me is still his pinical album / tour , without question will soon reach classic album status![]()
its all about the music but box swapping is so much fun
My daughter who is only 15 nearly 16 said you can feel he's lived each and every song . I liked the way he poked fun at himself as well . After playing some very melancholic songs he mumbled into the mike that he was trying to get all the quick ones out of the way so we could get to the ballads . Very dry .
First pressings son !
bit off track guys but if you like the stripped back sound of the current tour another fave songwriter of mine within the same camp , Matthew Ryan the album concussion one word awsome in everyway !

I was at Nottingham last night (reasons mentioned earlier) and I'm glad you guys really enjoyed the concert. I'm no fan of Ryan Adams and I have to admit to only knowing about him because my son gave me a few of his CDs which I've only listened to a couple of times, so maybe that was the reason I never seemed to get involved with the music last night. The venue was good, acoustics seemed fine and yes he played well, but I just couldn't engage with him. The others in our party seemed quite happy with the night, some RA education needed on my part.

That was an excellent gig, all the best off Heartbreaker plus some of the more melancholy stuff from the other albums and a couple off the last two albums, which sounded better without the band backing. A word of warning though, do not a cougher or prospective Ansel Adams be, he really does not take kindly to interruptions once he starts strumming. Very funny he nailed a couple of people.
The silence waiting between the songs was spooky, not had that before at a gig, the expectation was thrilling. It was a shame I was at the back and to the left, it still sounded stunning and took my breath away really.
Ryan can write a tune, sing a tune and captivate hundreds of people.
Thanks Ryan![]()
