The CGI (rendered using a Cray Supercomputer) is rubbish by today's standards but were ground-breaking for their time (1984) but still looked pretty unconvincing compared with the space scenes in Return of the Jedi which was released around the same time (and especially fake compared with the space scenes in 2010: The Year We Make Contact which was also released in 1984). Most kids (such as myself) who were into sci-fi in the 80's watched, and enjoyed, The Last Star Fighter.
I also enjoyed 'Enemy Mine' (1985)

There's also some dutch gangster trilogy, which I can't remember the name of.. grrr
Probably a bit obscure by now but I think one of the best things ever put on TV, is Heimat, the German drama following a family in the Rineland from 1919 to recent times. Stunningly good. You'll be doing yourself a favour if you look into getting /renting this. First series is amazing, second is good but can plod / annoy, but needs to be watched leading up to the third series, which is amazing as the first in it's own way.

Eraserhead, Barton Fink
John Peel said, "Life is full of surface noises." Obviously he never heard my rig!
Not sure exactly what constitutes obscure but
The earrings of madame de
Nashville
Johnny Guitar
The Scarlet Empress
Andrei Rublev
all spring to mind
Btw I was delighted to see Darkstar mentioned- how could I have forgotten seeing that?
Sole Survivor
And though it was big when released in 1988, no-one remembers 'Young Einstein' so it now counts as obscure. A very silly film, which is why I like it.
Ko to tamo pevo (Who's that singing over there?) - Serbian comedy/character study centered around a bus trip to Belgrade on April 5th 1941, one day before the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia.
The King is Alive - A group of tourists stranded in the Namibian desert stage a production of King Lear.
I'm so sick of pornography. Every time I see it I shake my fist at it.
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
- caught this on TV when off school sick as a kid - really struck a chord
- this is the ideal film to curl up with on the sofa when it's raining out and you've got a nice big mug of tea and a nice solid bit of toast.
