Turn the speakers around - have the speaker face the wall (both speakers free standing position say 4 feet from the walls) Which one sounds better.

Of the two AN E and B&W both have been reviewed in Stereophile. Which one do they buy. Considering that B&W has been around a lot longer and makes many more speakers for similar dollars - which one do their reviewers choose to BUY. B&W sells probably 100 speakers to every 1 Audio Note. Quality would dictate that 100 reviewers would buy B&W for every 1 AN. Reviewers tend to be audiophiles with a lot of experience listening to a lot of gear. AN has a disproportionate amount of buyers. As an ex B&W owner the reason I go on about them is to save people from making a mistake by buying style over substance - and that is B&W.

Grin...i think didgeridoo is sponsored by Audio Note and not B&W....i think that's all. I was expecting a much bigger conspiracy than that, i shall return to my mundane life forthwith.

    I didn't go into a B&W thread and crap on B&W though did I?

I have zero affiliation with Audio Note except that I own some products from them (at no special discounts). I used to own B&W. There is a B&W dealer in Vancouver BC - he basically rubbishes every speaker brand you can mention. Rips them - then tells people B&W is the Mercedes of the industry.

Soundhounds sells B&W D802. Sorry I am not hearing a $22,000 loudspeaker when I audition these speakers. He has them connected up to big Classe amplifiers. It's not bad (I am guilty of hyperbole to make points so I often have to be reminded to keep that in check). I bring a wide array of music and they're the kin dof dealer that shuts up and let's you listen for hours and will make you a cappuccino (and a damn good one as their machine is a big professional beast). Not the used car salesman approach of the Vancouver dealer.

They have a lounge area - this is an area of their store where they have a leather couches and chairs to sit together and have coffee and lunch and to deal with various company reps. This is the are they typically are listening to two systems. An Audio Note system and the "new" gear the store is contemplating to carry as a line.

Comparisons are easy. You bring your disc sit and listen in the good room with the B&Ws and then you stand up walk 20 feet into the bad AN room where they can't put the speakers in corners - and only 5 feet apart with a bunch of others lining the walls and no room treatments and you listen to your CD on that system. It's not a contest on any music and they stack the deck against the AN system. Hell in the lounge area they have them in the corners up against their GLASS windows (oh sure they made a make-shift corner out of wood but geez you could not possibly do much worse to stack the deck against them (or help their competitors).

Granted they don't like Audio Note from a sales perspective. First AN can't supply anything. I witnessed a nice fellow making an AN system purchase - he was trading in an all Linn system. This is the way it works - you like the demo AN system - you say "I want to buy it." Well sir you can have the level 2 amp and source but the speakers and turntable will be made to order - you need to pay up front and then wait 6-10 months to actually get the speakers. They then give him an AN J or an old beat up AN E as a loaner. From a sales perspective it's an atrocious line of gear to carry.

As for what people like - I have no problem if someone hears a B&W likes them and buys them - I did and I even regret selling an old set of DM 302s because that was a fantastic little speaker for a low price. I could have kept it in the bedroom or something. I traded it in at Soundhounds and within 1 hour it was sold. I met the guy who ended up buying them for his daughter - I wish I had such a fine speaker to start out on.
