SBT - Who knows the truth?

You don't say where you're based but are asking for help, i.e. to borrow equipment. If you were more forthcoming with your location, I'm sure there will be wammers who might be willing to help & perhaps come over with a dac/sbt etc..

Why not follow Tels suggestion & fill in your profile & list the rest of your kit? It would at least give some idea of some suitable suggestions.

Your budget seems to be all over the place, yet your cd92t could prolly be usefully bettered by a fair few of the current sub £700 dacs + a SBT. Remember with a dac you're not paying for a transport & you generally have to get into fairly pricey territory for dedicated cd players to better this performance. Using your arcam as a transport into the dac will also very likely bring improvements in SQ when playing cd's.

Until you list the rest of your kit tho' it's rather hard to say what the solution might be or how much it's worth spending & it may even be wise to look at other upgrades first/too even.

Given that you're saying that a lot of the music you have is of a ropey quality I'd suggest spending largish amounts on an SBT+ Dac combination isn't. the best idea really. It's not so hard to source high quality music in most genres & pretty much all formats. The amount of music you seem to be talking about too, is small for the size of outlay you propose. If you spent around £600 or so on an SBT+ dac & spent another five hundred notes on c.d.'s & ripped them to flac wiv decent ripping software, you could at least have some surety re the quality & also have a great deal more music besides, as 700 or so tunes doesn't seem like a lot of music.

You don't seem to have got the idea/point of what the SBT actually is/does. If you like various artist compilations why not just buy cd's of your favourite artists & either put together playlists yourself or just select random play of songs, these are all easy to do & you also have full access to internet radio without having the computer on at all.......you can even stream wirelessly from the computer/lappy in another room......which may lessen the chance of you going blind due to your porn fixation/affliction

It would be really helpful if you filled in your profile then we might have a better idea of where you are coming from.

The only reson I wanted a SBT is to have access to many music files on flash/hard drive without keep changing CD's.not interested in the online PC related stuff the SBT has to offer,as PCs end up pissing me off in the end then I end up getting addicted to you tube and all the other thinks like pictures of ladies etc..and such haha

I've got more than 700 tunes,but mainly they are the ones I play the most.When you buy a compilation their is usually only a few songs you like on their.
If the SBT is as good or if not better than a decent CD transport ,I'll consider getting another one.
The DCS DAC in the Arcam is still excellent though,and I'd be supprised if anything under a grand bettered it,as I've said
some geezer blew £1500 on a chord dac and couldn't notice any difference.It's better than the new Wolfson 24/96 upsampling mumbo jumbo they put in all digital stuff nowdays.
I think I'm gonna have to bring it along and do a comparison at one of these bake offs if I'm allowed to go to one.

The correlation you keep seeming to make re ultimate SQ & the amount something costs is not actually a great one either. Yes sometimes spending spending more will bring gains in SQ, but you do seem somewhat fixated on this & often the gains of spending multiple amounts more may be quite small whereas if you choose wisely you should be able to gain real improvements at a much more sensible budget.....as it is rather fortunately, good as your cd player was in it's day it can be rather handily beaten by a fair few of the current crop of Dacs at around £4 to 600. I'm fairly confident in saying this as until v recently I was running your cd players successor & as it is I'm more than a little familiar with the cd 92t too, so feel that I do know what I'm talking about here.

S'cuse me....must fly, as I'm currently having something of a Joe DiMaggeo moment......can't for the life of me think why........

The dilema I've got is that i own an Arcam 92T with DCS DAC and from what people have said is that I am gonne a have to get a Chord 64 DAC to get a small improvement on the one already in it,and they go for 1K used and much more when they were new,so the SBT and Chord are gonna set me in £1200 odd quid when I can get a used arcam for £200-£300.So I dunno if it would be worthwhile.I could just burn my
favourite 700 music tunes on 50-60 cd-r disks.Would that be more of a viable option.

I've now read quite a few threads about it.
Some state that it sounds "as good" as my £300 cd player,others saying better than their £2000 one
and that adding an expensive DAC makes no difference and others saying it does.

You have to assume some level of knowledge. Other acronyms were used in the production of this thread. DAC, CD, SQ, CDP, PC, PSU, FLAC etc
