    Operatic arias. What's essential?

I know I need to listen to the whole Opera. We do go once a year, but I'm compiling a CD as a present and wondered what you chaps would include on a list of 10 of the great romantic operatic arias (my challenge was to bring tears to the eyes of the listener without them understanding the words...I said I could, they said I won't!).

All my faves are Puccini, but what would be on your list?
    thanks

    am i allowed Vissi d'arte
[BTW do you mean romantic as in "I love you baby" or as in the period between classical and expressionist?]
    But forgetting Puccini
    Surely the quartet from Rigoletto
    & Ella mi fu rapita
    un di felice from Traviata

salut demeure chaste et pure from faust.
il mio tesoro and La ci darem la mano from Don Giovanni

    Porgi Amor from Figaro
I think that gets me to ten although I couldn't say it was my final definite best shot 10.

From Catalanis "La Wally" ~ 'Ebben? Ne andrò lontana', as in the film Diva,
& (although it's not strictly an aria) from Cantaloupes Songs of the Auvergne 'Baïlèro'

I recommend Victoria de los Angeles performances of both. Baïlèro makes me well up every time!

Just listening to Rigoletto now - I really love Parmi beder la lagrime and of course the magnificent quartet as has already been mentioned.

I have a blind-spot when it comes to Puccini, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. An early favorite when I started listening to trained voices was this Maria Callas selection. It has some standard repertoire (Vissi D'Arte) but also some less obvious choices (a blistering Divinites Du Styx).

Not arias perse but Richard Strauss' Four Last Songs get me every time.
This is also a big favourite of Tom's (montesquieu).
The most played classical piece in Chez Alan and never tire of it.

Also listen to a Neapolitan song called Rondine al Nido by De Crescenzo. Very few recordings of this but Big Luca takes some beating. Has me mopping up every time.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste and remember what peace there may be in silence.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons. They are vexations to the spirit.
