He has a CRV now and more than likely will downsize from it, so another SUV is unlikely

VW golf 6 tdi 140 dsg. 50mpg; within 15K budget; DSG and common rail diesel is smooth combo (esp compared to the rather rough Honda 2.2 unit); good drive overall and ownership proposition, materials/fit/finish; still with VW warranty; easier to get in and out of (plus see out of) than Scirrocco.

eg 30K miles @ main dealer:

    http://www.vcars.co.uk/used-cars/cardetails.php?t=gforce&u=367082

    Always room to haggle.

We have run a 170hp GTD dsg with all the goodies for just over a year now. It's a good car to own and drive, more than reasonable running costs. 45-50 mpg overall mixed driving over 15K miles. The 140 hp model just as good. Anodyne to dull but actually pretty capable.

Heh, he has just called me and told me he's bought this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...10603/usedcars

So he blew his budget (don't they ever?) but they gave him 5k trade-in on his Honda, when he was only expecting 3.5k, so there you go!

Thanks for all the suggestions, even the Cayenne and the Isignia

Actually, that's a lot more suitable than any of the suggestions above (although I really like the C6...). I think he's going to enjoy that a lot.

Nice. Slow ofc, but should manage 45mpg if he's cautious. Ride is good. I'd have suggested Hyundai, but this will last and last.

nice car, but sluggish compared to the 220, but fuel consumption will proably offset that

Obviously, subliminally, he thinks he can still pull the birds.?
The phrase, 'old bald gits in Porsches' springs to mind!
    Or...a line I read somewhere.
When a waitress is nice to you, it's not because she fancies you; she's just being nice to the old guy in the corner! (-:

(I'm one so you can respond accordingly! But I have -so far- resisted getting a Skyline 350 GT!)

I have just had the local merc salesman offer a C220 (New) estate, auto, metalic paint, in a ''new'' trim level, SE plus a bit (Leather seats) for about 27k. The trim level starts being marketed in a couple of weeks I understand. I will try and see the salesman in the next few days and get it clarified. Bit tempting.

Edit: The Merc your Dad chose looks lovely BTW
