    Fake Meat

Looks like the boffins are very close to perfecting a hamburger that is indistinguishable from beef.

Would you eat a fake hamburger?
What if it was half price and half fat but tasted just the same?

They've been on the verge for ever!
I'd eat the plant based one but not the animal based one.

Great. Just what the world needs, more highly processed shit full of chemicals and grown in a dish.

Hmm cancer specialist figures out how to 'grow' something in a dish that can be minced up and served in a bun. Appetising.
The difference between theory and practice is greater in practice than in theory.

I can see your concerns obviously and i'm wary of this too, but the idea is a good one if they can make it safe etc.
Quorn has done a great deal of harm I think to this kind of research in that it's horrible and makes all of us ill....i'm sure there are others

Well as someone that hardly ever eats meat (just lost the taste for it) as my ex hardly ever cooked with it.

    So...

Vegetarian Black Pudding - Made with beetroot and caramelised onions, and indistinguishable from the real thing.

Facon - absolutely great, not as convincing as the above but great even down to the fake fat!

Would I eat meat grown in a petri dish? Its a bit soylent green for me.

Either eat meat, or don't. I would rather eat good meat, as in well reared, well butchered and worth eating less often, than cheap poor meat, or synthetic meat daily.

We'll be having 'real meat' grown in a vat rather than on a cow or sheep or chicken soon enough.

From that article ... "The other approach is to grow actual meat in a factory, animal muscle tissue sans the animal itself, and this is being pioneered in Europe."

    Good job, too!

If eating meat, locally reared and butchered - quality not quantity.

However not every meal should include meat. It is an inefficient way of producing protein. So if good quality food can be grown that satisfies taste and nutrition while using less resources - why not.

If it also happens to be more healthy - all the better.

Your tastebuds must be shot if you think that's going to be indistinguishable from a real black pudding.

I'm screaming vegetarian, but if you are going to eat meat then 1. make sure it's great quality that's sourced properly and 2. enjoy it as something gave its life .
I have no problem folk eating meat by the way... despite my veggie ways, but if there is an alternative to give folk what they want and being less harmful on the environment/beasts then i'm all for it. To argue anything else is a bit "bloodlustful" to my mind -which again if that's what you're into tehn all well and good.

I'm a carnivore and have taken more of an interest in the quality and providence of my meat since I aquired a smoker this year.

I agree that the focus should be on animal welfare, quality not quantity etc. However, I am thinking that there are millions of people accross the world, definetly including the USA and China that do not care where the meat comes from. Certain third world countries would be glad of some cheap protein I'm sure.

We are in the middle of a population explosion and environmental concerns. Synthetic meat is another 'holy grail' just like the cure for cancer and a new fuel source. Not only would it make a company billions, imagine the impact on the environment if you could reduce the amount of livestock grown for meat by say 75%.

This is not another Quorn as the article says. Fillets steaks may be some years of yet but synthetic chicken breast meat should be an easy step after the burgers.

I once went to a 'mock meat' restaurant where all the 'meat' dishes were made with either wheat gluten or soya. It was quite horrendous!

If Vegetarians get their way, the population of meat animals will fall dramatically.

Why do they seem to think this is a good thing? Give cows a chance to live!
