    Wankel speaker design?

    http://www.planotspeaker.com/Planot/Home.html

did a quick search to check this hasn't done to death here - it appears not. I'm not sure if it's a hoax or not but am extremely sceptical it would work. I'd have thought that the mass of the vertical radiator would need to be lower & stiffer than feasible. Seems extremely simple but can't see it being either flat nor loud enough.

As a pedestrian, have always been very impressed by the rain/solar/wind/thought etc powered Wankel automobile engine.

Many of us have found strange loudspeaker systems that work magnificently/safely despite not being orthodox. Many membranes/vibrators/dreams/imaginings etc.

That's been around for quite a while and went through a pretty protracted development. There was quite a bit about it on diyaudio.com at one point. It looks promising, but either he's got no money to market it or he has tried and no one is interested because it doesn't work well. If it was the best thing since sliced bread and his licensing wasn't too onerous then some bright spark looking to cash out would have brought it to market by now.

    Hi
That thread dates back to Oct 2007. Some ideas in audio do fail due to licence miscalculations, HDCD springs to mind. The desire to remove the cabinet makes sense - Gradient have done so where the bass is fine as long as the speakers are hard up against a rear wall without destroying imaging in the process. There are many different transducer designs but very few are single full-range radiators. The flavour of the month seems to be active speakers that remove much of the distortion associated with passive X'overs - that makes sense to me. Perhaps going active will become the norm.
