    Havana Dac Chip swap

    Hi all,

I have been reading about swapping chips in this dac. Apparently it is a cheap tweak with a few saying it brings more gain than a tube swap from the original stock tube.

    PMC56P - L
    to
    AD1856N-K or PMC56P - K

Has anyone tried this? Or is it madness?

I think Earl has modded a Havana in the past, which included swapping out the stock dac chips with K's
    I'd shoot him a pm.

Didn't know/had forgotten? that he'd done THAT too!
Let's see...."utilises legendary R-2R burr Brown PCM56P DAC chip" (says Papa)
    So, yes.
But he DID do a few other bits as well.Caps; power supply, etc.
Never did do a side-by-side with my previous Paradisea though.
All I can say is, it plays music. And others think so too.

Hi, Bry. How're the Vandys settling in?

One should be sparing with ones contempt because of the large number of those in need of it.

Hi, Bry. How're the Vandys settling in?
    Hey Chris,

I've had them since about '07 (first owned the 1B's in '89) so very settled in and still sounding great.
AlanB has recently purchased the new 1Ci's, which have the 3's tweeter unit and improved crossover. From what I've gathered they are brilliant and may just get a pair myself down the road. Would love to try some HL-5's in my set-up sometime too.

    Cheers

You start the Vandy club section. Having just had a PHY visit....I'll do that bit!
    And maybe the Zigmahornet too!

Yes, its worth it. There seems to be more presence to the music. Slightly bigger soundstage and better imaging. Not night and day but a definite improvement.

I bought off ebay with 2 chips costing £19. Postage was free but the seller tapped me for a further $3 for signed delivery.

    Overall, well worth the money!
