Standmount speakers , which ones?

My listening room is 4x4 meters. I am currently using little Mission M71's on Atacama stands and although they sound good they lack in bass and I believe they just cant fill this size room. The listening position is near field also and this put it in the middle of the room.

So , I need some speakers that can throw the listening position a good 3 meters away (are these described as farfield?).

I am not loaded so only have a budget of a few hundred quid.

My system comprises of a Marantz PM6010OSEKI. Marantz CD6000OSELE, Marantz ST6000. Chord odyssey cable, Logic DM101 .Datum 2 arm Goldring 1012gx.

I have been reading up on KEF IQ3 speakers, they are a little bit more sensitive than the Missions and have been described as farfield speakers.
Any thoughts?

I know where you are coming from, similar situation myself.

I'm not a big fan of the KEF Q range, they sound a bit samey tonally, sharp, glassy, spitty even maybe sometimes, the bass can be a bit 'buffy' if you know what I mean.

I think the Monitor Audio B2 (and newer versions) are much better personally.

A couple of hundred quid? well with a room thats what, roughly 12ft square you may want a larger stand-mount.
I got some ATC SCM10's for £300, a bit over budget but very very good, may need a better amp than the Marantz though, same goes for the SCM7 which can be had, if you are lucky, under £300.
I have some Kord Vulcans which sound perfect, but they are not up for sale just yet, and would be around £200.
Tannoy DC1000 may be worth a look, usually had for around £100-£150.
If you fancy the Kef range, the newer Q100 and Q300 are much better than the iQ range.

I think that the older Mission 760i's sound great for their size, plus give out a surprising amount of welly. Price wise, £40 for a good pair used, so something of a bargain. Don't let the budget credentials put you off. These were (to my mind) some of the last really well designed little Missions before they were bought out and went to the Far East. There's the 751's too which offer a little more refinement for a little more money. As Rob says, the Monitor Audio stand mounters are pretty good for the cash too. If you want good bass from a small standmount, you won't get it unless you have a less efficient long throw ported design with beefy amplification. You could step up to less fashionable larger standmounts, but within your budget they would be an older pair, thinking here of the older Celestion Dittons or Harbeths, which to my mind are still cracking loudspeakers today. Better balance and greater depth. There's also the Castle loudspeakers which represent (IMHO) something of a bargain used. In your case, the Castle Inversions or Knights may be worth searching out (can be had for £300 used).

3m to the speakers isn't nearfield IMHO by the way. It's a pretty average listening distance. Nearfield listening I've always associated with speakers 6 feet apart and about a metre distant!

Thanks guys , there is a pair of scm12's on the bay at the moment for 300 notes, it's the 60 quid shipping cost that really blows them out of my budget.

I was always under the impression that a new'ish budget speaker would outperform an older speaker as the design and technology of speaker building has made leaps and bounds in the last 10 years or so. I read that somewhere I think.

I would say no, IMO older speakers that you can now pick up very cheap, that may be older designs are much better value than anything bought new, under £300 anyway. There is a lot of rubbish out there, so not everything is a golden oldie.
The Proac Tablettes would fill that room fine as long as you dont want disco levels, need a little room behind them though.

There has not been esentially anything new in speaker technology since the 50's. New cone materials, differient magnets and fancy cast frames but nothing that would in real life mean an older speaker is no worse than a newer one.

I would always go second hand in the sub £300 bracket.

Other speakers to look at are the Rega R1 and R3 models, Rega Jura if you really want to party.

I would tend to agree with the above statements. Especially Rega. Having said that, the Marantz kit are not the most subtle. Consider a slim floorstander too. If secondhand, Missions last decent speaker, the 782 was very good and if you can track down the last SE version, even better! If it has to be a standmount then the Mission 750LE is also a cracking speaker. Both will make the 71's sound like they are covered with a blanket lol. Both can be had well within budget.

I would highly recommend Dynaudio range, the DM2/6 is latest model at £535. If you can pickup some secondhand Dynaudio 42 or 52's or even better some Focus 110. Dynaudio make high quality drive units and supply to some other top speaker manufacturres. I use to sell these in my part time job in the Hifi Company Peterborough, in a reasonably sized demo room. Decent bass, smooth detailed and musical. These always sold in preference to Quad, Kef, B&W and Monitor Audio. People used to go in Sevenoaks have a listen and come back to us fot them.

If not Dynaudio, some secondhand Sonus Faber Concerto's, bit more expensive than Dynaudio's when new but may be some good secondhand bargains about, also look good as well.

spot on - these or the CDM1NT - excellent soundstage, plenty of bass, easy to drive + unfussy abt partnering equipment & have seen several pairs go for £250 or less

had a pair of kef iq3 but i think you could do a lot better like dynauadio or spendor s3e etc

I heard some Heco standmounts again recently. Excellent they were.
