Denon DA-305 tonearm, perfect for DL-103 cartridge
I bought this direct from Japan as a second arm for mono on the Thorens, but I've settled as my mono cartridge on the Miyajima Premium BE, which can use the Kondo SUT and is of comparable weight to the Io to minimse any fafffing when changing headshells. So I don't need a second arm any more.
This is a highish mass vintage Japan-made tonearm, specifically designed for use with the old broadcast Denon DL-103 cartridge, but also suitable by virtue of its construction for other medium to low compliance cartridges like the Shelter 501 and 901, the vintage Supex range, most Dynavector MCs, and the Ortofon Kontrapunkt, Jubilee and Cadenza range as well as many others. Not sutable for high compliance moving magnet stuff and I would think borderline for medium to high compliance cartridges like Lyras and some of the ATs.
Nice construction as you'd expect from vintage Japanese, the bearing is in perfect order, and the back part of the counterweight has two positions to accommodate a wide range of cartridge and headshell weights. No arm cable or headshell with this but both are SME standard fit.
A very high quality tonearm, massively better for those cartridges like the Denon which need a bit of mass than just about any Rega-type arm out there.
It's a 9in arm and 230mm spindle to arm distance which is the same as most other Denon arms as well as other high-end Japanese arms like the Fidelity Research FR64. I have a suitably cut arm board for a Thorens TD124 available for a wee bit extra if required. The base grabs the arm spindle in two places, there's a hand-tighened screw for quick adjustment, and a thicker second screw at 90 degrees from that. The tube part of the base is quite slimline and consequently the base itself is quite low footprint.
Sound-wise it came across as pretty well sorted when I tried it out with various cartridges including AT-Mono3, the Premium BE, an Ortofon MC20 and a Nagaoka MM.
I paid £155 from Japan, plus postage, VAT and brokerage which took the price I paid to around £240. Looking for just the £155. Payment by PPG or BT.
