anyone have any?

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80057257

thinking of using them, paired up for a cheap sphere enclosure, the 20cm one for the Bandor 50mm and the 28cm for a seas Aluminium 5" bass driver powered by sub amp.

how thick are they?

Ta

the 28 cm ones will still only give a volume of 2 Litres or so.

How much do you need?

ah, i worked it out that the 28cm one would give around 10L and the 20cm one with around 3L :?

thats why i need to know the exact thickness etc ;)

Ta :D

Interesting idea :^

I would have thought 3L was more than enough for the little Bandors - probably too much. A Jordan JX92S only needs 3L (assuming closed box).

my mistake. I did think it looked wrong

Vol of a sphere is 4/3 Pi r cubed

1.333 x 3.142 x 0.13 x 0.13 x 0.13 = 0.009 Mcubed or 9L

9 Litres (less what the driver displaces) might still be enough.

yup, modeled in WinISD, the Bandor will be fine in the 20cm one, may need to make it a little smaller (stuffing, sealent etc) and the 28cm one (9L ish) should be fine for the Seas Woofer

went and got 4 of the 20cm bowls for the bandor first, to try them out, hopfully get them together before the end of the week :dude:

here are the parts list -

and a mock up of the sphere

need to mount the Bandor on a round disk, which should make it easier to mount it to the sphere :)

i quite like the patchwork look of the different shades of birch wood :dude:

ironic you should have chosen one of few drivers with a square faceplate

will be watching this build with interest - you certainly do think outside the box in every possible sense! :^

yeah, although ive had the bandors for a while, did think about getting some 80mm full range drivers (plenty to chose from) with a round frame, but that really defeats the project ;)

just a bit of fun for now, but who knows where it will end up

Back in the 70's I worked for a company that sold spherical speakers made out of glass................................Goldfish bowls!!!!!!

They actually sounded amazing, using a 4 1/2" full range driver that was basically the same unit as used in the Bose 901 at the time.

yup, they are brilliant, love em to bits :D

very simple, only took about 3 hours in total (not all at once though)

and if you dont end up doing anything with your pair, i would be happy to take them off your hands ;)

played 'Kila' - 'Luna Park' (one of my reference tracks, Technobear and Earl might remember it from Earls bake off a while ago ;)) and just sounded brilliant, so real :)

I think they're a brilliant idea, great looking too. I take it they are full range driver, therefore no need for a crossover?

yup a single 50mm metal cone, no crossover, quite inneficient, guessing around 82dBish, and cant really go that loud but sound simply wonderfull with vocals and the like :)

need to be 'finished' sometime, the mdf front baffle will probably be covered in felt or somthing, then they need a good sand down and varnished or whatever, not too bothered about the final looks to be honest, probably a bit of a trend in my DIY stuff :D

Hoops that is such a good idea, I have been after some little speakers for my room at Uni and these sound perfect/easy. Do you mind me asking how much they cost to build all in? Also how did cut the circle out of the bowls???

Thanks
