During a recent visit to Avi to purchase a LS cd player Ashley kindly offered me a prototype pair of the new N5's to take home and trial, an offer I readily accepted. I have given them a good listen over the last couple of weeks and now feel it only fair to post a review ( Please bear with me as this is my first attempt at this )

Firstly I can't comment on finish as these were only prototypes but I believe they will be in piano gloss black and anyone familiar with Avi products will know their finish and build quality is always second to none.

As soon as I hooked these up to my LS integrated and LS cd player it was immediately evident that these were a very detailed, dynamic and clean sounding speakers with a lovely open mid range and the bass was as substantial as you could expect from a small standmount, its dimensions are 31 x 16 x 21 cms ( H,W,D ).

The bass lines were always easy to follow and never sounded flabby or muddy even when the mix got busy and there was absolutely no trace of over hang or boom which some rear ported speakers can suffer from.

Treble was never too upfront or aggressive just clean, crisp and precise. Vocals were well projected and never sounded nasal or shut in, in fact they
were as good as I've heard from speakers costing £1200 and above.

Soundstage was good and the seperation was also excellent with all instruments being easy to place with no harshness or over smoothing to cymbals, guitars etc

Musically they weren't fussy either as I played a selection of music, rock, blues, indie, acoustic and electronic and they gave a very good portrayal of all genres. I will add that if your a real bass freak then these probably aren't for you but they were more than capable of filling my 18' x 14' listening room with a good clean and authorative sound and as with all quality Hi Fi its a case of rubbish in rubbish out as these are revealing speakers.

To sum them up they are in my opinion a very detailed, dynamic and tonally accurate speaker that are perfect for average sized rooms and they are also not fussy about room placement either, I had them about 10 to 12 inches from my rear wall. The N5's are going to be retailing at only £399 and at this price they are an absolute bargain and in the sub £1000 price bracket they are sure to be a cat amongst the pigeons.

This review is purely subjective and relative to the speakers size, price point and the acoustics of my room and as with all hi fi its prudent to listen before you buy.

Thanks for reading and I hope it was informative enough,

Egger

P,s

I have also posted this review over on PFM and there were a couple of suggestions that the price in the review must be wrong but £399 is going to be the RRP and this has also been confirmed by Avi on that post.

Those dimensions are bigger than the current Neuton IV, 31cm is a full 4cm taller.

My Neutron III measure 27 x 14 x 21

Hi Miller-8

Those are the new sizes and as you quite rightly point out the new N5's are going to be a bit bigger.

All the sizing and pricing was given to me by Ashley when I took them and I checked again before I wrote this just so I could be as acurate as possible.

Tantalising!:22:Nice review,thanks.
I have the Neutron IVs, which is also 27-14-21, and was planning to keep them forever. Now I hear the Vs will be available in gloss piano black and with likely improvements, I may be sidegrading again.:P

For me, the IVs are amongst the best standmounts one can get in the price bracket up up to £750. For £399, I'm sure the Vs will be a real killer.:)

The 9.1 is something different.

I can't see the new Neutron sub on their website so you may have to email for details, but from what I remember the sub includes a DAC and a three channel power amp and will retail at about 1000GBP.

9.1s are a revision of the ADM9 that include improved DAC and power amp, plus an additional input making the total number of inputs two optical and one analogue. The pric is going up to 1125 GBP IIRC and that's the two speakers alone.

There is a matching subwoofer available for the ADM9 / 9.1 and I believe it costs another 750GBP.

I will be buying 9.1s as soon as they're released because I like the additional input and they sound even better.

If you want crazy bass I read that AVI even do an 18" professional sub, but it's 5k. They may have been selling these off for less though.

SSM - I've heard the prototype Neutrons on the end of flagship Lab Series monos. They were fantastic but the ADM9 were still better, and the total system cost less. I think it's the passive crossover that is the bottleneck

The ADM9 come in lots of nice finishes and are lovely and well-built so upto your standards. The website pics may not do them 100%; I was so much more impressed when I received them at home and could appreciate them in the flesh.

I'm sure they will ship to you ;)

O Hot Fireman - who rides on the crest of the latest audio trends:P - don't tempt me...:? I have plans to keep the Neutron IVs to pair with my MF X-T100 later on when I upgrade the amplification in my main rig. They sound good together. So a sidegrade to the Neutron 5s would be less of a pain in the wallet than ADM9.1s.

Mind you, I like what I heard of the ADM9s. And the better facilities of the 9.1s tick many of my boxes... :nerves:I'll try my best to avoid listening to them when I check out the new Neutrons!

Nice to see you are adhering to the active speaker route. (My, my, improving on "long-term commitment" are we?;))

I look forward to your in-depth review of your ADM9.1s

Mr Egger, can you give the woofer size of the Neutron V? Is it bigger than the 5 inches of the Neutron IV?

Hi SS

The bass driver is 5" so the same size as the 1V's.

The cabinets are going to be a different size so to the 1V's and Ashley has said they have been improved and they have had a price reduction too, so alround a good deal especially in piano black gloss

S&M Man,

I don't see any point in using the MF with the Neutrons when the ADM9 cost the same as that combo and will sound far better.

The amps I heard the Neutrons with were the unreleased AVI special 750W monoblocs and as good as the Neutrons are, they cannot compete with the ADM9.

I will only buy active in future. I wish more domestically acceptable options were available though.

I love the Neutron IV, we use a pair in our listening room at the studio, great thing is they look and sound like a quality mini monitor and for post mix they are great for demoing tracks to the band. I'm still tempted to take them back home....

I'm gonna book a demo and listen to the V's:^

Striking observations there, Hot Fireman. ADM9s outperform passive Neutrons that were fed 750 AVI watts a piece? That's something to think about...

Ok, if I can sell all of my second system separates, I wouldn't mind taking a chance with the new ADM9.1s. As it is, the second hand market is rather limp these months due to inflationary gloom. And I'm iffy about adding more hifi stuff to my domicile without selling the old first. (ps: I see your Coplands are still with you.:P) Hopefully the resale situation in Tipoca will improve by Halloween and I'll taste the ADM9.1s.

Meanwhile I await your appraisal of the ADM9.1s, rich boy!:D Will be interested to know how much better an active speaker design can portray orchestral music than standard passives. (Freer dynamics?) Put on some Mahler symphonies (3 & 5) if you can.:)

cheers,
S&M xxx

That's just what I want to know - how those of us poor sods who haunt the classical cabin will find these new active wonders - I'm still hovering as can't get a listen, and the new model looks even more tempting
