I received a letter today from a local dealer and Rega stockist inviting me to a Rega fettling day (new belts and service for turntables etc)

Good idea I thought especially as they are only charging for parts and Rega staff are coming to do the work.

Shame I don't have a Rega TT. :)

Reading on there was an invite to come along and hear the new Isis and Osiris which are apparently the new CD and Amp.

I really like my Saturn but since getting a TT, having a top loading CDP in the rack has become a bit of a pain.

I can't find anything on the Rega website, has anyone heard of these products?

I guess this is the new top end 'non-secret' cd player they have been developing.

Sounds like the amp is the matching integrated i was given hints about a while ago.

Any other info on them ?

They wont be on Rega's web site till about 6 months after they have been released;-).

Looks like it might be worth getting a couple of hours off work and popping along.

It is just round the corner from home, but not until the Friday 29th May, so I will report back then :)

I dropped in at the local dealers for a chat this afternoon.

They know about as much as I do, apparently Rega were going to bring the kit along unannounced, but finally allowed them to include the names in the invite letter. (it seems they were not 100% sure they could bring the new Amp and CD player).

I am told that this will be the first time they will be heard outside of the factory.

Firstly thanks to Julian and the staff at Audio-T in Brighton for an enjoyable couple of hours this afternoon.

With the addition of a couple of tables and some Rega techies the showrooom was transformed into a workshop and it was obvious that a lot of people had taken them up on the free turntable fettling offer. Labour was free and the customer only paid for parts.

Fair play to Rega supporting their dealerships in this way and having some respect for their existing customer base.

At one point in the afternoon our listening was interupted when a 25 year old Planar 2 was plugged in after a service and sounded just like new after a chap had bought it in as a non-working TT.

But on to the business in hand.

One of Rega's directors was there and I asked his permission to take the photographs I am posting here. Thanks for that Phil, (to my embarrassment I can't remember Phil's surname ).

Unfortunately the Osiris was only there in spirit, there was just a case on display but no working model, but this is what it looked like.

Now onto the Isis CD player, which was demonstrated with Rega Cursa pre-amp, Exon mono block power amps and Rega RS7 speakers which I have to say looked stunning in Piano Black.

The build quality is superb and a massive upgrade for Rega.

The black anodising is excellent and the 'lid' on the top loader is a suptuous black chrome, and for those on the internet who say black chrome doesn't exist, well it looked pretty good to me.

The front has similar basic controls found on the Saturn with a more comprehensive diplay that still uses red LED.

Once the lid is lifted there is nothing really exposed with a nicely finished metal 'well' and no plastic in sight anywhere

The Isis has uprated power supplies and weighs in at a hefty 18Kg

The rear connection panel allows a choice of single ended or balanced outputs and the XLR outputs are not just there in name the circuitry is fully balanced.

There is also a USB connection which allows the player to be used as a stand alone DAC.

No arguments about wanky wires here, they come as standard with the player.

Well the mains lead and Phono leads do, I don't think they provide XLR leads.

One last word about construction, it is designed sourced and built in the UK.

They did not have the remote at the demo, it is apparantly, metal and chunky and tactile and expensive etc. As usual with Rega they never design anything that won't work with anything else they have ever made so the CDP worked quite well with a Solar remote which I think was originally developed for the Planet.

What does it sound like?

This player owes a lot of it's developement to the Saturn and there is a definite house sound.

It is very Saturnish but there is just more, more detail, more controlled bass, at first I thought there was a brightness about the player but in fact it is just detail. I played 'Revalator' by Gillian Welch, it effortlessly seperated the two guitars, this is a close miked track and the attack of the notes and slightly abrasive echoey feel of the decay of the unmistakenly steel strings was readily apparant and slightly un-nerving as I hadn't heard it like that before.

'Baba O'Riley' by the Who was up next and the Isis took firm control, all the stereo tricks at the beginning were sorted and Mooney's drumming was superb, a great track sounding on top form.

Lastly I played 'Pass in Time' from Beth Orton's Central Reservation. There is a wicked bass line in this which combined with Terry Calliers vocals has failed to be resolved satisfactorally by quite a few players I have demoed. The Isis handled it with ease.

I have to say that there was enough there for me to want to spend more time with this CD player and it would have to be at home for an extended trial and a 15% discount offer for orders on the day didn't have me reaching for my credit card.

I am not sure how much better this player is than the Saturn, in build quality and finish it is miles ahead, and sonically it is better. The guys at Rega reckon that if the Saturn is 100% better than the Apollo then this is 200% better. But the laws of diminishing returns do set in, it maybe proves what outstanding value the Saturn is, but with half an eye on the price tag I really would have to try it at home. The system I was listening to and the room acoustics were totally differnt to mine at home, it took a couple of tracks just to get my bearings.

Black is not easy to photograph and I was only using a cheapo digital, but the Isis really does look good and would happily sit on top of any ones rack. I would be proud to own one. :D

Did someone ask about the price?

£6000.00

interesting, and thanks Tell, but at £6k it will 13th hand before I could consider swapping one for my Saturn. The Rs7's are another matter however.

I hope thats not the finished product as both look very, very rough.

Cd player looks a bit tacky my Apollo looks more refined and elegant.

That is the finished product and it makes the Apollo look like a cheap nasty metal box with a plastic front, which it basically is, I used to own one.

As I said

Black is not easy to photograph and I was only using a cheapo digital, but the Isis really does look good and would happily sit on top of any ones rack. I would be proud to own one.

Wow rega have gone all out then Tel. It will be interesting to have a good listen when the finished versions are in, I do like the Rega sound in general and having spent some time with colins set up at the bake off, I can only imagine how good there "no compromise" kit might sound.

Thanks for the scoop by the way, nice work :^

Yes, but (don't think about price) look at the difference there is from naim cd3 to the 555 player, it's a totally new player, where's the rega looks like a slap together from the spare parts bucket ......maybe a bit harsh, I'm fond of rega i have a p2 and the Apollo.
