Whittlebury Show 2013 Write Up

Rogues in town

————————————-
image

image

image

Some new and very interesting kit from project. Switchable between valve and solid state.

Signature 10 sets out pro-jects stall for a new audience.
image

————————————-

image

New Roksan range looks hugely improved.

K2 bt amp priced at £895.00 with blue tooth. Making good sounds here with some waftastic audiovectors.
image

————————————-

Caterhun loudspeakers.

No Caterhun isn’t a kit car company from Germany. These are beautifully crafted loudspeakers.

Playing James Blake right now. Bass is colourful and deep. Voices project really nicely. Room is interacting a little too much perhaps for a real assessment.

————————————-

Dcs. Cheap little bedroom system. ..

image

I’m not normally a fan of the avalon speakers… or so I thought. I’m used to hearing them with the conrad Johnson kit branko sells. This dcs set up has put some oomph behind them and they are more impressive than I’d previously thought.

The sound might actually be too immediate now… hmmm

Piano sounds clear yet the bass guitar is lost and undefined. It’s a lot of money and I’ve heard better for less I’m sure.

Take 5 now.. the kick drum sounded so real.. yet there’s a real bass blurring in there. Shame as so much of it is excellent.
————————————-

Audio emotion room. Gato amp and audio physic aventera. With some raspberry pi powered streamer (expect the market to be flooded with these soon).

Sound is a touch too thin for me. Not what I experienced from the gato at home at all. Perhaps the streamer is guilty here. Or the AP’s.

image

Haha funny how a change of music can change your mind. Elvis singing fever now. Its a rich and textured sound. Must have been the recording before.

Lesson learned. Never walk in listen to two mins and walk out shaking your head. It could be a dodgy recording or simply a tune you don’t like. Glad I stopped a bit longer here.
image

The give away raspberry pi interface shouldn’t put you off. Sound quality is not held back by the little computer running the show.
————————————-

TAD and Brodman speakers.

I couldn’t live with the horse brass styling but I havr to admit the sound quality is not to be sniffed at. They image well. Very well. A busy room is not the best environment to analyse sq but the general impression here is positive.

————————————-

And relax.. icon audio. Valvey goodness.

More bass issues here which is a shame. The room is solid and the speakers have plenty of room around them. :-/ not sure why there’s bloom. voices are stunning though.
image

————————————-

Brian and Trevor’s. It’s not a hair salon. Nope. Its a hifi thingy… not sure what it is to be honest. ..
image

Either way, between cut and blow dries they do a nice line in ps audio power kit. Mains generation kit. The demo honestly if anything it sounded more alive without it. The mains generation stuff squashed the dynamics a touch. Although (its layla unplugged) the sound was a touch cleaner and seperaration a touch improved with it in place.

————————————-

Burmester win the prize for best music choice. Teenage wasteland by the who.. excellent fun. Not going to comment on the sound. I’m enjoying myself too much.
image

————————————-

Kronos and Usher making a decent sound in the decent audio room. Pretty decent.

image

Decent is their word. In fairness this is a lot better than decent. A visitor just fekked the kronos. Oh dear.. simon of turntableworld’s head just span 360 and I don’t blame him. All back and running now. That’s Simon you know from 2ndhandhifi by the way. He brings in kronos and looks after Usher in the uk.

————————————-
Audio alchemy room, showing that a tape deck isn’t always a bad sound.

image

image

image

Interesting. Nit seen a tape deck at a hifi show… err. Ever. I’m not old enough.

————————————-

Teddy pardo.. room is too quiet. Not enough volume so can’t tell. ..

image
————————————-

Z axis audio

Tad speakers with concert fidelity amps. And ariya sacca supports

image

————————————-

Hifi lounge.

Pmc fact and bryston.
image

Its a bit Jamie cullum… oh no boom town rats now.. haha excellent.

Thunderous bass without bloom. Very controlled and clean. Yep, good music and good sound. Good stuff.

————————————-
Just been seen being bought lunch by a dealer… credibility blown :-)

————————————-
Focal and dcs.. with some skinny cables..

image

Ben Howar’s backing group sounding muddled and confused. Lacks coherence. Bit Boom tizz so far.

They look confused too. Berlilium tweeters really can portray voices well though, Contrary to popular opinion.

Something too squidgy about the bass though. I don’t get this set up. Sorry.

————————————-

Gamut.. expensive kit. Room full of foo..

image
Cable lifters spotted.

However what a lovely sound this is.. one of my favourites so far. Shame I seem to have expensive tastes.

The image is perhaps not thw most defined I’ve heard. But texture is the word here. Really superb.
————————————-

Vpi demo. Showing how to set up their turntable out of the box. Brilliant idea.

image

He’s saying that it’s unusual or odd to put a £1k cart on a £1.4k turn table.

Not round here it isn’t. Certainly not at my house :-) think my cart is more expensive than my tt.

Good passionate talk about the industry.. good guy nice to see something different and to hear some passion.
image

Vpi with gimble bearing..
image

image

Adjustable feet for level. Totally sensible and sadly lacking on so many turntables.

He’s off about foo now.

Can’t stay any longer . Need to hear other rooms..

————————————-

Sound foundations

image

Little clear audio set up :-) with some magnepans.

Crisp. Very crisp sound.

The canor amps pictured below

image

Amazing bass from these panels.. I’m looking for the sub.

Also playing real music. Good stuff.
————————————-

Audio note room.

A mish mosh of tin boxes and some milk crates in the corners.. and as usual. Somehow it sounds so right.
image

James Blake bass hahhahahahahahahhahahahaha thunder… a small amount of room interaction here.. lol. Still, wow. No idea how much of that bass is the AN e and how much is the room. But it’s remarkable. The tuneful nature of it suggests its probably the speakers. I know this track goes low..

Great stuff. Uh oh. Plinky plonk.. next room.

————————————-
Raidho accoustics..

image

A change of music to female vocal and guitar.. to win back support perhaps.. I’m not fooled. Style over substance sorry.

————————————-
. Music first audio. . Reel to reel and a little quad 300.

A bit sibilant to say the least.
image

————————————-

Janszen speakers.. first room playing classical.

image

Bass was integrated but sadly lacking. Too clean and sharp a sound for me.

————————————-
Cad – as reviewed for us by Ed Selley.

With Pmc and lavardin.

I do like this.. going to sit and relax for a while I think.

Yep Ed was right. This is good kit.
————————————-

Inspire hifi
image

Gorgeous turn tables.

Atc scm 40’s. Always wanted a pair and that’s still the case.

Monarch direct drive tt.

Classy bit of kit. Immediate but not in yer face.

image

7.7 k including audio origami pu7.
