  4. Klimax DSM Organik Review With Non-Linn Speakers Using the Organik DAC’s I have just returned home after auditioning the new Klimax DSM A/V with the Organik DAC’s, and have good news to report about my impressions of the new Organik DAC’s in a non-Exakt system Just to refresh your memory, I listened to this same DSM in my system, but as a Klimax Hub, as my speakers already have the Katalyst DACs inside them, so I was not able to audition the Organik DAC’s with my Linn Exakt speakers. ‘Yesterday, I helped setup the Klimax DSM at my friend’s place that uses PMC Fact 8 Signature speakers, powered by a pair of Klimax Solos and an Akurate DSM/3 with Katalyst. After a few connectivity issues, swapping DSM’s and not finding the room, we got that sorted by removing Kazoo from my friend’s iPad and then reloading it through the App Store ‘We had an extensive playlist and started playing many of our reference songs, but it turns out that this DSM had not been used with non-Exakt speakers, and therefore had no burn-in time on the Organik DAC’s. Sound quality was fair but a bit harsh on the top end. We played a couple more hours of music, and decided to let it play music continuously, until I return back to his home this morning. He phoned me last night, after about 5 hours, and he said sound quality started to improve, but still had some harshness in the highs, but the music was smoothing out, with more dynamic presentation ‘Fast forward to this morning, and the DSM now has about 20 hours of burn-in time. It was a significant improvement compared to what I heard the afternoon before, by streaming music continuously since yesterday afternoon. As the hours went by, the music became smoother and easier to listen to. His Linn system with the Akurate DSM/3 Katalyst is normally very detailed and highly engaging, with a sound quality I could easily live with. However, the Klimax DSM with Organik DAC’s takes that up many levels We played many of the same reference tunes that we had heard on his system the day before, but added some exceptional sound quality tracks, which really revealed the capabilities of his system. I can highly recommend the following music if you want to show off your system: ‘Jesse Cook’s album Gravity, playing track 3 “Gravity“ Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio album Midnight Sugar, playing track 2 “Midnight Sugar” Comparing the Akurate DSM/3 with Klimax DSM Organik DAC, the Organik music had much more presence and dynamic presentation, with a greater sense of being at the concert. The music seemed more immediate with the musicians performing right in front of you. The detail was exceptional and a whole soundscape unfolded in front of us that filled the room like I have rarely heard before. The DAC’s were still not fully burned in, and their was a faint touch of treble brightness on a few of the tracks. I expect that this will disappear with more playing time and burn-in. Steely Dan’s Hey Nineteen was vibrant and alive, with brilliant rhythm and pace, every musician right there and upfront. Boz Scaggs Dig album had King of El Paso with exceptional insight into the music. For example, the tambourine had such presence and dimensionality, you could hear it moving up and down, back and forth with crystal clear detail. Some of the tracks felt like intimate performances, with the musicians right there. This was especially true of the Jesse Cook and Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio tracks. Jesse Cook, Gravity has guitar and drumming that is incredibly fast, detailed and musical. It is hard to imagine how anyone could play the instruments with such speed and precision, and yet every note was clear and concise. It was an extravagance for the ears, and absolutely staggering. I thought to myself, this is why I became an audiophile and music lover, to hear music like this. Tsuyoshi Yokohama Trio, Midnight Sugar starts off gently, with drums, bass and piano, but takes you on a journey that feels like you are floating along on a boat on a river, moving as the waves move the boat gently up and down. The sound quality is exceptional in every aspect. Drumming is so detailed and precise, and you can hear every beat of the drum sticks and bass drum as if you were standing next to the drums. Every pluck on the bass strings is taunt and jumps out at you. The piano is unreal, with the tinkle of the piano keys in the upper register exactly the way you would expect if you were playing the piano yourself. The leading edge of each note has immediacy and presence. ‘Linn has really delivered with Organik and the new Klimax DSM/3 AV I have heard many different brands of music streamers, speakers and amplification. What I have been hearing with the new Klimax DSM is the best of the best, and am absolutely astonished at the sound quality that Linn has been able to achieve with this new Klimax DSM. ‘I found exceptional improvements in sound and picture quality, whether I was streaming music in stereo or 5.1, watching TV or movies, spinning 5.1 DVD-Audio, SACD’s or BluRay discs. Linn has really accomplished something astonishing and well worth a listen. ‘I highly recommend an audition at your dealers or an in-home demo.

  5. Black - Wonderful Life. Some great songs on this album and a lovely voice. So glad we decided to go and see the singer, Colin Vearncombe on my birthday in 2015, for the first time and sadly, the last. He died 8 months later, aged 53, following a road traffic accident. Another one taken too soon.

  7. I'm sure if we had made a direct A/B/A comparison, the difference would have been bigger. But so there were two very good systems with NGKDSM having more control and information. With Klimax Kontrol / KDS/3 Katalyst you could listen a little more relaxed - probably because it forgives errors in the recordings.

  10. Our previous cleaners were a retired research chemist and an industrial gas engineer. And a guy who does a bit of gardening for us is a biologist. Which I suppose is apt. Can't remember whether I've told the story on here before, but I was cutting the hedge at the front of our house, which was a semi. The next door neighbour was in her 90's so I used to just carry on and do hers at the same time. One time, she had a visitor who wanted to drive up to the house whilst I was stood in her driveway amid all the clippings. She told me in no uncertain words to get out of the way and move the clippings as she wasn't going to drive over them. When she left the house some time later she apologised, saying she thought I was the gardener. I told her it didn't matter, she shouldn't talk to anyone like that.

  14. I made an appointment for today with my local dealer and before hand told him I like to do a visit to check out his new shop and that I’m not buying stuff. So I’m going in for “tire-kicking”. I also like to hear/see/feel products that are maybe possible on the long run. As long as you are open about your visits the dealer has a choice to accept your visit or not, I think hifi dealers are well aware of this situation. I want to add to this that it would different if you went tire-kicking at a dealer to buy the stuff online. If decide on a new product I will buy by the dealer who’s time was invested in me. I also like to back up Paul’s argument, you never know how life works out and you are a potential client for the future.

  15. Many years ago, I was out for a walk and serendipitously walked into a Rolls Royce dealer. ‘I told the salesperson that I had never sat in a Rolls Royce, but there was no way I could afford it. With no hesitation, he walked my over to their top model and opened the door for me and motioned me to sit in it and enjoy. He said, you never know what your life will bring you, and you could be a future customer. He allowed me to luxuriate in the car to enjoy the colours, textures and feel, admire the build quality and dream of driving one. I have never forgotten his kindness and generosity of nature. ‘I have built up a good relationship with a number of HiFi dealers, and they certainly don’t expect me to buy something every time I visit. They know that I have referred other customers to their shop, and are more than happy to let me audition anything I want in the shop. ‘The shops are in business to sell HiFi products, and a big part of that is for them to build up a good relationship with their customers. ‘I would not hesitate at all to make an appointment and audition something I am interesting in hearing. As the Rolls Royce salesperson says, you never know.

  17. I have to say that the specialists that have been caring for Rox have been absolutely superb, both in the level of care they offer and that they have been so kind and helpful to us from a financial perspective. Obviously they didn't have to - they could have simply insisted on charging the same as they would for someone claiming via insurance, but they have done as much as they can to help us to fund the treatment, and we are forever grateful for this. So... today was the big day. Dropped Roxy off at 07:30 this morning for her pre-op preparation and the confirmation MRI scan prior to surgery. Got an update at lunchtime to say that the surgery had gone very well, no complications at all. She was out of theatre and recovering well, and they are confident that she will be able to make a full recovery within a few weeks. This evening's update further confirmed that she's been improving all day, and with luck she will be allowed home some time tomorrow evening. Obviously no more photos at the moment as I'm not allowed to visit, but will try to get something when I collect her. Once again (sounding like a scratched LP now) I want to thank each of you that have so kindly donated to help out with the cost, you're an incredible bunch of people with huge hearts. Oh, and to add the icing on the cake, today I also received notice that I have been offered a new 3-month contract, so after 6 weeks out of work, I will be back to earning again! Start Mon 24th so got one more week to get prepared. BEST. FRIDAY. EVER!!!!

  19. Yesterday I had the chance to visit a friend to compare NGKDSM A/V (ca. 50 hours burned in) against Klimax Kontrol / KDS 3 Katalyst. The good news: 1) he can still enjoy his Klimax Kontrol / KDS 3 Katalyst 2) I can still enjoy my Klimax Kontrol with non-Linn DAC

  20. That's how ATCs behave. If there's something wrong upstream, they will tell you about it, improve the signal, they will "sound better". But it's the same speakers.

  22. Well I’ve had a taste of the Organik today, conscious clean, wallet stil full(ish) (oh man I kid myself ). NGKDSM hooked up to solo’s feeding to Vivid GIYA 4, no fancy cables whatsoever and no other kit to compare to, so the listening was in complete isolation and all components where new to me. SO was not employed btw. Long story short: jawdropping. If you have the cash and are already in Linn ecosystem it’s a must listen. So much texture, layers, control, details and musicality is new to me and really impressive. I really did not know this was possible. Getting back home to my not exactly cheap stuff was quite unsettling the first hours, it sounded like transistor AM in comparison, my ears really needed to adjust after the experience of this morning. Also, dealers best estimation is that Organik will reach the akurate boxes of yesteryear but no guarantee, Organik will be available for Selekt DSM and the akurate integrated speakers. Needles to say I will pack some penny’s just in case.

  33. Too much Snobbery. The class system isn't a concept that works for me. This is my first ever Blog from July last year. http://saferoxfordstreet.blogspot.com/2020/07/stopkillingbusdrivers-whos-listening-to.html The first part of it deals with respect; or lack of respect. In the past, I've witnessed someone telling a Police Officer (removing them from the bus for abusive behaviour) that "Bus Drivers don't have any rights". This isn't an unusual attitude. Dating website years ago: Woman: What do you do (for work) * Me: I'm a Bus Driver. Woman: Oh dear. *there were pictures of me in a vintage bus on the profile... I've worked in retail. I got spoken to like I was nothing. I didn't put up with that though! Oddly enough, when I was a Driving Instructor, the responses were completely different; it was as though I was now in a line of work considered 'Socially acceptable'.
