  1. Gilbert o’ Sullivan - No Matter How I Try. Harry Chapin - W.O.L.D. Neil Diamond - Cracklin’ Rosie. Gallagher & Lyle - I Wanna Stay With You. England Dan & John Ford Coley - I’d Really Love To See You Tonight. Bought them all on 7” singles, when they were released. I’d have been crucified if my mates had found out.
  2. Well, TBH, I would never have thought of choke loading to get the maximum gain and drive out of the MH4s, even though I have done it before with UX227s, so your contribution was quite a large nudge in the right direction . The amp itself does perform extremely well. Now I’ve finally settled on the KT120s, it’s subtle where it needs to be and kicks butt when required, so now I can at last start thinking about building a valve phono, which is a whole ‘nother can of worms.
  3. Aye... because a inductor loaded driver stage and global feedback are not the best of bedfellows, I was stuck for a method of adding a bit more feedback to the existing screen grid feedback provided by the ultralinear connection. The cathode feedback has proven to be very effective. I’ve never heard a PYE Mozart. I know they’re supposed to be good.
  4. I've had a nice little valve amp completed for the past few months. It was built as a collaboration between Steve57 and me, and is sounding great. There are two valve rectified power supplies; one per stage. The power stage is self-biased and uses KT120s running at 350V a-k @ 95mA per valve. The input/driver stage is a pair of 1930s globe MH4, courtesy of Steve and is loaded by a pair of Hammond 156C, 150H 8mA chokes. It's power supply is a shunt-regulated 225V provided by 0A3 and 75C1 glow tubes in series I've had all sorts of power valves in it since I finished it a few months ago, from EL34/KT77 to KT66/88/120. The KT120 has proven to be the best all-round option for my musical tastes and gives a nice even response from top to bottom, with very good bass depth and control, and plenty of headroom, which gives a sound you can relax into, and listen for hours without fatigue. The power stage runs in single-ended ultralinear configuration, with local cathode feedback, obtained by placing the output transformer secondary below the power stage cathode resistor. It's a a variation of the "super triode" configuration put forward years ago my Menno Van Der Veen http://www.next-tube.com/articles/Veen2/Veen2EN.pdf (P3) for diagram. De Veen gets his cathode feedback from a separate cathode winding on the OPT, but my config where the feedback is taken from the secondary, was taken from Morgan Jones. Super Triode is in my opinion the best way of connecting a power pentode for SE operation. It’s far better than triode strapping and gets a sound very close to a direct heated triode, but with more power. I get 11Wpc out of this amp.

  8. “Alas! Victor, when falsehood can look so much like the truth, who can assure themselves of happiness? I feel as if I were walking on the edge of a precipice, towards which thousands are crowding, and endeavouring to plunge me into the abyss!” Mary Shelley - Frankenstein.
  9. This cannot be repeated often enough. At this upcoming election we must vote for the party that has the best chance of beating the Tories, we have to kick them out. We'll easily survive a Corbyn Labour government. But another five years of these right-wing Tories will be a nightmare for everyone but the very wealthy.
  10. They wouldn’t do it if fooking imbeciles didn’t believe everything they say. It only takes one or two brainless troglodytes to fall for the bullshit and bingo, you get to shaft the population for another five years. I’ve disengaged from it altogether. If the trogs vote the sneering tory bastards in, then I hope they get everything they deserve. I’m past bloody caring.
  11. We’re gonna have to face facts here. The Tories are going to get in no matter what a small minority of us on here think. A significant number of voters (easily enough to let the Tories in) are greedy, self-serving, uncaring bastards who don’t want to pay for anything, but want everything. The working class being left wing Labour was an aberration, caused by two world wars. Now we have reverted to type and most of us are once more well to the right and increasingly nationalistic. The tories know this and they don’t really have to do much of anything except avoid too many gaffes. They’ll be home and dry with a big majority. I predict a 100 seats. Being centre left is going to be a lonely and depressing existence post Christmas. Sorry and all that, but that’s the way it’s going to pan out. I’m watching the Remembrance ceremony at the Cenotaph ATM and could weep at what the country has turned into. A bunch of right wing Nationalists. We will never learn.
  12. The top plate is like a bleed’n Swiss cheese, after all the mods. The plan is to rebuild it onto another top plate.... when I can be arsed.
