  1. suggest you look on the GR-Research channel, because that's definitely not the impression i get. yes you need to do smthg special for the bass, and if you dont mind a 6 or 7 foot tall enclosure you can apparently get decent bass and SPL from a line array. their H or W frame open baffle subs seem to be very good, using special servo controlled amps and drivers.covered very nicely in Danny Ritchies Tuesday Tech Talk series Their best designs seem to use planar magnetic treble drivers, but as this is in the US it might be there's little little experience of them outside of there. I find it all rather intruiging and would love to hear them
  2. I really liked my passive Sara's (with Naim 42/250) before I moved on to Isobariks DMS which I later converted to Aktiv with LK1 and 3 x LK2's
  3. if it's anything like the Kabers the instructions are on the crossover PCB. should be just a case of relocating the driver wirtes to different points on the boards
  4. has anyone any experience of open baffle speakers including open baffle subs, compared to the typical closed box designs we're mostly used to? I'm thinking specifically about the open baffle designs like those offered by GR- Research and similar. I've been watching a lot of the GR Research videos on YouTube recently and the work that Danny Ritchie does in fixing problems with and improving commercial speakers is certainly very impressive, by developing better X-overs with top quality parts, plus his Tuesday Tech talk series which covers many of the basics, and i have to say, the open baffle designs do seem pretty compelling, but how would they be described by people used to typical infinite baffle speakers, and in my experience...Linn Active and Exakt setups ? As the GR Research designs are available as kits, it seems a pretty tempting prospect to build one of the models best Rgds Steve
  5. just found this thread elsewhere that suggests the 2549 is preferable over the quad2534 https://gearspace.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/898731-mic-cable-mogami-2549-standard-vs-2534-quad.html although thery do seem to be more into studio applications than domestic hi fi situations, FWIW.
  6. I'd started with a search for an answer and found that topic,so yep very serious. the directionality is believed to come from how the crystals are aligned in the copper during the wire drawing processwhich would cause disruptions and slippage along the crystal interfaces In a continuous production process such as wire drawing and cable insulation extrusion both are you can expect good continuity and reproducibility, and the spooled wires and cables from one sub process will be fed off the reel into the next sub process, so the bundled strands of wire of the balanced conductors will be spooled and then fed through an extrusion process to coat with uPVC or better still polyethylene (even cross-linked Polyethylene (XLPE)like Mogami use), spooled up again and then bundled together and fed through the screen wapping or braiding and outer jacket extrusion where as you say the labelling will be printed on, and one would assume this would read from left to right with the extrusion direction being from right to left as the machine operater would normally set up the printer so s(he) can read it as it prints with the finished cable moviong from right to left in front of them. The final cable is then spooled again, so yes, you know which direction the cable runs from the outer jacket printing, but the key is what is the ideal orientation in terms of its sound? Linn must use a vendor that controls each stage of the process so the ideal orientation of the conductors is known and maintained through to the final jacket extrusion and printed so their directional labelling retains its integrity and meaning. If everyone says these Mogami 2534 cables don't sound any different from end to end then I'd be willing to try it and save a bit of dosh over Linn silver by the metre., I had to sex the direction of the in my old Isobarik DMS system when i converted to active I had to determine the direction of the several XLR cables connecting the aktiv to the 3 LK2's by listening to each cable end to end and marking the ideal direction, as they were not marked. Once i found what to listen four it was a pretty quick process as i recall, but it was a while ago, around 1987. I just don't fancy going through the hassle again if I kan avoid it. cheers, Steve(PhD in Polymer Science and former employee of Dow Chemical, one of the largest Polyethylene and cable sheathing material producers)
  7. But if you buy the loose cable by the metre snd make up your own terminated interconnects What’s the directionally of the Mogami 2534? How do you know which direction to build the interconnects and connect them? at least the Linn Silver is already marked thanks
  8. @paulsurround, well I hope my experiment with switching my mid and treble Klouts to an Akurate 4200/1/B (while keeping two Klouts on the Bass) is not unfounded. also got 2 Chakra 3200's to replace 3 Klouts in my active kaber surround system
  9. has anyone any experience of open baffle speakers inkluding subs, compared to the typical klosed box designs we're used to? 10. apparently there’s some important football match going on not that I've been paying attention, it'll all be over soon. am at my mother-in-laws near Hamburg at the moment, and the buggers were all supporting Denmark the other day, even my wife (so much for family solidarity), maybe I'll mention the war and see if i get away with it, like Basil Fawlty. But Denmark ?. they're bloody Vikings... I should have started singing Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam...
  11. I marked the wires coming out of the main enclosure with T/T;M/M;B/B on the cabinet with a fat marker great idea to remove the X-over and banana sockets completly and fit new sockets in the board. I wish i'd thought of that at the time as I removed the sockets off my X-over boards and used them with solder tabs.. However I dont see me getting shut of my Kabers as I'm "only" using them as the fronts in my surround system in the Home cinema room
  12. Well done Neil, really great work. Impressive flat rsponce... How do they sound ? I have the drivers now to do my Keltiks which will soon be running on Klimax Exaktbox Katalyst, and another set for my Kabers (non Exakt) I got the M15CH002 for the Kaber Mid and a W16NX001 for the Kaber bass as it has more bass extension, so thats a bit of an experiment/ gamble. but Linn helpline confirmed to me oin Friday that each Kaber driver is in its own compartment inn the cabinet. Using the OW-2 in both cases.
  13. thanks Zee , point taken and i was lucky to find 2 Chakra 3200's in Germany last week which my buddy collected for me this weekend. enquired with my dealer for the Dynamik power supply upgrade Now i could just find a set of Chakra Kaber kards... Steve
