  4. So how can a DAC be 'musical'? (Apologies didn't read whole thread , looks like this has been discussed!) There is a kind of anthropomorphism going on here ie giving human characteristics like 'musical' to inanimate objects like a DAC.

  6. But many perhaps most recordings don't document a single group performance. The illusion that one can hope to get closest to is the the stereo master tape or file that was put forward for replication and distribution, be it as a file , on CD or Vinyl etc. Now this master may, probably did, have all kinds of eq and effects etc applied to it in the recording , mixing and mastering process but it's that finished master tape/file that the producer/artist wants you to hear. I think a redbook CD (or equivalent) , correctly reproduced,and manufactured is probably the closest one gets to that master recording.

I don’t think it’s saying that , the graph only goes up to 16kHz, perhaps the pipe organ can play up to 16k in which case the line is black Up to 16k and the overtones and harmonics, yellow part go beyond 16k. The black part of the bar graph, the fundamental frequencies are taking preference over the harmonics of the lower notes which they block out. Edit - looking more closely at the Pipe organ bar it does end at about 16k, i think they've just missed off the harmonic part of it.
  8. Ah yes that's a more interesting chart. So a speaker that can go down to 50Hz say, you would be missing the fundamental frequency of notes played on instruments that go below 50Hz but the speaker should re-produce the harmonics and overtones above 50Hz hence one can still hear their presence.
  9. The problem I have is that with the best hi-fi (presumably v expensive kit), I would find myself listening to the equipment not the music, wondering whether the outlay had been justified. With good budget kit I find it much easier to forget the kit and just listen to the music.
  10. Overtones and harmonics are at frequencies above the fundamental frequency of the note the instrument is playing. Hence on the graph if the lowest a bass guitar can get get down to 31Hz which is a B (I though it would be an open E , 41Hz, on the bottom string but I guess the bottom string can be tuned to the B below that E) then all overtones and Harmonic will be at frequencies above that 31Hz. At the top end, if the highest a human can hear is about 20kHz (more like 14kHz for a bloke of my age I believe if I''m lucky) then the graph displays quite well what we can expect a speaker to reproduce given its specs.
  11. For a year I owned Harbeth P3ESRs, KEF LS50s and Q Acoustics Concept 20s and would listen to each for a month or two at a time driven by an 80W Yamaha amp. I don't listen at loud volume levels. I liked all 3 speakers but the first to go were the LS50s as I felt I couldn't listen to them at a loud enough volume to hear them at their best. A few more months of listening to the Harbeths and the Concept 20s led me to settling on the Concept 20s. I preferred the extra bass extension of the Concept 20s but in other respects there wasn't that much to chose between them in my room at the levels I listen at. I couldn't hear a £1000+ price difference between them which I know would irk me if I'd held on to the Harbeths. (Being 57 perhaps my hearing is not what it was is a factor). Also there's less to worry about in regards to ownership with a cheaper speaker in term of accidental damage etc. I must confess I have kept coming back to Concept 20s over the years , I'm on my third pair! My interest has been piqued lately though by the new Q Acoustics 3030i, the new Rega Kytes and the Triangle BR03s

  13. I joined on the 25th July 2005, I thought I'd left it late. I was a refugee from the Hi Fi choice forum, James said 'over here everybody' as I think the Hi Fi Choice forum was closing? It was the wild west in the early years, with some great characters, where are they all now? Some are still around I know on various HiFi fora.
  14. Time for an update ... I've finally got into Joni Mitchell, the gateway album , as predicted by Notaclue if he's still of this parish, was Hissing of Summer Lawns. It was also having spent the last year listening to an internet radio station called Soma FM Left Coast 70s based in San Francisco. Soma FM play a lot of Joni Mitchell and the quality of her work started to sink in, perhaps by listening to her in some kind of 70s AOR context. Ok that only took 13 years, Bob Dylan next.
  15. I owned two pairs of speakers at the same time (I know!) a pair of Harbeth P3ESRs (£1500 or thereabouts?) and Q Acoustics Concept 20s (£250) which I used to switch between. After about 6 months of this it became apparent that in my room there were differences between them but not huge differences . In the end I sold the Harbeths and stuck with the Concept 20s because a) I’m a bit tight and was happy to liquidat £1100 from the sale of Harbeths b) the anxiety of having that much money in your lounge which the cleaner or kids might trash c) The Harbeths were not, by cost, 500% better than the Concept 20s. To confuse matters I also owned KefLS50s at the same time as well but that’s another story,
  16. And on the exhibitors list no mention of Nad, Yamaha or Q Acoustics? Basically my hifi.

If Harbeth are happy to demo their speakers using a Marantz CD5005 via a Hegel or Yamaha amp then these Harbeth dudes , who know a thing a two about audio engineering, surely must be content that this kit is as good as any to show off their speakers to the best of their ability. I like that about Harbeth.
  18. Yes so presumably any amp they use will be one that does work as it’s supposed to, we know the Yamaha is one, I’d be interested to know what other makes and models they attribute that to if they use something different.
  19. Also be interesting to know what amp Harbeth will use to demo their new PS3ER speakers. I understand they have used Yamaha in the past.
  20. Could it be that larger speakers don’t sound as lively as smaller ones as they’re shifting a lot more air?
  21. They really mis-handled this. Could they not have branded the existing app Sonos ‘Classic’ and maintained that within the limitations of the hardware and then introduced the Sonos ‘Classic Plus’ App for newer hardware with features that the ‘Classic’ system couldn’t handle?
  22. Yes I did , I’ve had two pairs of LS50s over the last 6 years. In my experience you have to drive them harder/louder to appreciate them and to hear a significant difference in quality between them and the Concept 20s. Living in London with quite close neighbours etc it’s not that neighbourly to listen at those volume levels required. Given we are talking about £750 Kefs v £250 Concept 20s it was a £500 difference that I couldn’t hear which in the end bugged me hence I settled on the 20s. To me they are very balanced, image well and sound ‘right’ in my room. The sensitivity of LS50s is 85dB whereas the 20s are 88dB so more easily driven and I found them very satisfactory at lower listening levels. I’m using Yamaha RN602 receiver /amp which I love so I am talking budget kit.
  23. I’m on my third pair of Concept 20s, I just keep coming back to them, I love them. In my room, at my typical listening levels (not loud) they work really well. The new 3030i speakers look very interesting now though, I was always impressed by Gromit’s room at Scalford where he demoed QAcoustic speakers and have been a fan ever since.
