Yep, and the culprit is a pair of Tannoy Cheviots. They were part of a project I took on to rebuild for Pgarrish of the Wam. The crossovers have been stripped back and new components put in place of the rather tired capacitors and all the resistors were replace as well. Sadly the HPD drive units had to be rebuilt as well as they were suffering with foam rot on outside suspension. I got my repairer to replace these with ribbed surrounds just like the Monitor Gold drivers, but unlike them these are black! Unlike a lot of Tannoys I have heard these sound so crisp in the lower midrange to treble. They do bass as well, and it is not the sloppy bass I have heard from some Tannoys, rather it is tight and very tuneful. The drivers have been ran for about 6 hours or so, and they are continuing to get more bass extension as they are run.
The spatial depth is as good as my mighty Buli ( I built loads of these but still cant spell it!) Treble is very smooth and surprisingly it does not seem to roll of at the top of the register. The upper mid is..........just right.
Although I had a little difficulty due to a faulty component, this will be addressed next week when I get to my supplier. I changed the rather poor standard cable from the termination plate to the crossover board with 2.5 mm and hey presto it works! Paul had a pair of stands made for them, these have been screwed into the base of the cab, after removing those poor risers!
How do they sound..........wide...........deep...precise...........loads of bass extension. But no sloppiness in the stereo image. I will never say Tannoys are poor again.
Any one got a spare pair of 12 inch HPD's and crossovers I can borrow for about a year or so, I fancy making a pair of 1/4 wave cabs for some.
