  1. In my experience, most (probably all) floorstanders sound better (clearer, more lucid) when raised at least 2-3 inches off the floor. Does that make them standmounts?
  2. Thank you. But no good, I'm south west!
  3. I have... MBL 116F speakers with PL Prologue 7 monoblock amps B&O CX100 speakers with PL Prologue 5 stereo amp. Very pleased with both setups.
  4. They look a bit like a mix of ProAc Response 3 & 4 speakers. Both marvellous designs. Different porting arrangement, though. And probably different in countless other ways as well! Very nice. I'd love to hear them.
  5. Fantastic to hear that Kralk is reborn as Alchris Audio. I'm a big fan of the Kralk speakers I've heard. I bet those speakers sound amazing. Congratulations.
  6. I'm a big R-2R DAC fan. Currently enjoying a Holo Audio Spring level 2 DAC. There's an openness, tangibility and in the room presence to the sound that ticks my boxes very accurately and seems consistent with the MyST 1866 DAC that I previously enjoyed, also a R2R design. The Holo does it better, but at several times the price it should do. I have no idea at all how they would compare with the Primaluna DAC, not having heard one. A visit a few days ago to Alan Firebottle showed his system with its R2R DAC performing in similar open and tangible fashion.
  7. A delightfully autumnal set of mostly gentle orchestral tone poems by Australian composer Mark John Mcencroe. The album cover image says it all.
  8. Oh, OK. Here they is, along with backup solid state amp in preparation for the next heatwave (8x 6L6GC power valves put out a lot of heat!) The amp's came with Primaluna branded kt88 toobs, as shown in the pic, but I swapped them out for an octet of TAD 6L6WGC. More open and transparent, but smoother and less punchy; more to my taste.
  9. My, how time flies. Two and a half months now since I 'upped' from my Primaluna Prologue 5 stereo power amp to a pair of Prologue 7 monoblocks. I can easily imagine ticking more hifi boxes with other gear, but as Bohemian says, I don't care. This really is the most musical sound I've come across in my half century of messing about with this hobby. Sling in a superbly listenable Concordant Exhilarant valve preamp and my journey to the Valve Side is complete.
  10. Trigon aren't well known in the UK, but I had a pair of their monoblocks for about 18 months, the only reason I sold them on was that I fancied looking at something else on my shelves! Really seriously good kit. Glws.
  11. They are Marmite things, particularly susceptible to personal taste - one person's 'very good' is someone else's 'you've got to be joking'.
  12. I've yet to hear a single driver cone speaker that sounds plausibly realistic, most I've heard sound broken tbph. It seems like a good idea, but in practice there are too many compromises for me. And proposed solutions to the compromises, like whizzer cones, just add to the problems imo. Exceptions have been the large Ferguson Hill clear perspex jobbies (although they need a subwoofer) and the more expensive examples of the torpedo shaped Eclipse speakers. My favourite speakers are 6 driver, 4 way designs, so I guess I'm not really the target buyer for a single driver speaker!
  13. I enjoy the original MDAC in a 2nd system. I've toyed with the idea of an MDAC Plus, but the used prices are too close to the cost of a new unit so I've never actually pulled the trigger on one. I guess the high used price indicates that they are highly thought of. I'd be interested in your impressions of the Plus. (Have you heard the original?)
  14. Shortlist for the astronomy photo of the year https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-57653901
  15. A large comet has been discovered hurtling in from the outermost regions of our solar system, the Oort Cloud. Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein has an orbit around the sun which takes about 3 million years. At its furthest it is about 40,000 AU (0.6 light years) away. 2030 will see its closest approach 11 AU away about the same as the orbit of Saturn. (1 AU (astronomical unit) is the distance of the Earth from the sun). https://phys.org/news/2021-06-giant-comet-outer-solar-dark.html?utm_source=nwletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-nwletter
  16. Doh, I really should have read the whole of that article! At the end it addresses comments from the team leader of the original "phosphine discovery".... '... The team is about to formally publish responses to other scientists who doubted the robustness of their telescopic observations. "We've looked at the data again, major improvements have been made [by the staff at the Alma observatory in Chile], and I'm really happy with what we've seen at Venus," Prof Greaves said." The cut and thrust of ongoing scientific research. So it's not over yet!
  17. OK, so maybe not life in Venus's atmosphere, but how about Jupiter? https://news.sky.com/story/water-conditions-in-jupiters-clouds-could-support-life-says-new-study-12344076
  18. There are a lot stronger and more convincing arguments against the Venusian life / phosphine hypothesis than that. Severe doubt has been put on whether the phosphine was detected at all, and was a spectroscopic detection of sulphur dioxide (iirc) instead, which is not a strong biomarker. Edit: yup, SO2 https://www.washington.edu/news/2021/01/27/phosphine-venus-so2/
  19. Hmm, yes. True that. I was shocked. I've a refurbed one and it is indeed excellent. Not quite cheap as chips, but near as dammit.
  20. Game changers for me, in terms of achieving high quality at a substantially reduced price, included.... Amptastic Mini-T amp. For £50 it bested many a multi £k class A/AB amp. XiangSheng DAC-01A. £100 and it sat happily in a 5 £figure system. Proac Response 2 standmount speakers. Not cheap back in the day (£1600 in the mid 1980s) but totally revised was I thought was achievable. (They replaced and totally embarrassed Quad 63 stats). Philips GP390 ceramic cartridge, ridiculously good for about £50.
  21. I recall hearing these small speakers at a show. The way they managed to fill and energise quite a large room with excellent sound was amazing!
  22. Recommended! https://www.hifiwigwam.com/forum/topic/152650-fs-tad-el34b-str-quad/
  23. There was a magical synergy between my old Viva 300p integrated amp and Phil TheCount's Snell A3. Only 18wpc or so via paired 300B, but it did the biz. Phil bought it off me and the last I heard it was seeing off all comers.
  24. It is a very nice amp, though, I can understand the interest in it! I hope things are working out for you.
