  1. Yes, I believe so. TAD say they "select" the valves they sell, and my ears tell me that this is so - it's seldom that a TAD valve of any type doesn't sound really good. Where "really good" for me means clarity, speed, openness, 3D imaging. Hearing my 1st TAD valve, at a bake-off, was one of those jaw drop moments for me - I can't even recall the amp now, but various 12ax7 were slotted in. Some good, some not so good.... then the TAD went in and a gloriously natural and vivid 3D soundstage suddenly opened up. Whoosshhhhh! TAD have been my goto brand ever since, I'm seldom disappointed.
  2. Hi Steve. A Primaluna Prologue 5 power amp.
  3. I'd recommend TAD EL34, by far the best clarity and dynamic nuance I've heard from the valve type. I'm not usually an EL34 fanboy, but the TADs were very enjoyable. Hotrox has them for about £50 a matched pair. https://www.hotroxuk.com/tube-amp-doctor-el34b-str-premium.html
  4. Superb stands and a real bargain price. Originally designed for the superb Proac Response 2 speakers, hence R2, which is what I used them with. Glws.
  5. A (mostly) introspective and thoughtful contemporary "guitar concerto" by one Ferenc Snetberger.
  6. I had a pair of these. Seriously good sound quality, and yes, a bit bass heavy so Lawrence's reversible mod seems like a good idea. Recommended!
  7. I think the Romans knew about this dealer 2,000 years ago https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caveat_emptor
  8. Sorry, that link didn't work. Now fixed. This one's OK. https://www.sciencealert.com/wild-new-paper-proposes-the-center-of-the-milky-way-might-not-be-a-black-hole Isn't it all about gravity (which dark matter does respond to)? Dark matter halos, in which normal matter galaxies are embedded, are they not effectively large diffuse clumps? In depth understanding of the dark matter models is, frankly, beyond me! But the full MNRAS paper, which has been accepted for publication presumably after peer review can be downloaded from this link - https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.06301
  9. What if.... there isn't really a 4 million solar mass black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy? But instead the same mass of dark matter, a dense blob with thinning outskirts stretching far beyond the putative supermassive black hole. This could actually provide a better match for observations of the orbits and behaviour of stars closely orbiting the object at Galactic Centre. And it could also help explain the baffling mystery of how observed genuine supermassive black holes in other galaxies grew so large so fast - they didn't, but instead formed from similar dark matter clumps which collapse to form black holes when they grow to ~100x the mass of the object at the centre of our galaxy. EDIT: link fixed - https://www.sciencealert.com/wild-new-paper-proposes-the-center-of-the-milky-way-might-not-be-a-black-hole
  10. A totally yummy transcription of Brahms clarinet trio, swapping clarinet for viola. I'm not usually a big viola fan, but this works wonderfully well imo.
  11. I'd add.... Electrical recording Valve amplification Solid state amplification The LP Digital recording -- I'd ditch Wharfedale Diamond, Naim, dual concentric driver, Chord DAC64, stiff and factory records (whatever they are)
  12. I hope you're not expecting a commission on this, Jon. But yes, the PL is plug and play with a whole load of valves including EL34, KT66/77/88/120, 6L6, 5881, 6550.
  13. Tsk, how remiss of me. I hadn't thought of putting in a plug for my own For Sale gear!
  14. You don't mention a budget and 'small' is a relative term.... on looks alone I'd consider a pair of Quad II power amps, excellent classic looks. Sound is rather laidback. Maybe add a Quad 22 pre?
  15. some scenically satisfying amps from my hifi journey
  16. That Cello passive pre looks fine to me. Often enough buyers want a standard size box, or a manufacturer wants a consistent appearance across its range. Given the needed functionality there's only so much 'stuff' that is required to achieve that. So you get empty space. I must admit that fails to distress me.
  17. Douglas Lilburn chamber music for string quartet and subdivisions thereof. I love the laidback vibe to this album.
  18. My first ever hifi speakers,Sony SS-7200. Tbh, they weren't very good. They did look quite cool, though. And my first ever amplifier, a Sony TA-1150. Which I suspect was better than the speakers And the inevitable at the time Pioneer PL12D Getting on for 50 years ago.
  19. And here's your prize in its box
  20. If there are people prepared to pay that much then it's not surprising there are companies who develop product to sell to them. I think it's called supply and demand. If something is less than I'd pay then it's poor quality, if it's more than I'd pay then it's a rip off.

  23. It sounds to me that you've got a large amount of money that you are desperate to spend for some reason! Take it easy, slow down - or you might waste it.
