I purchased a lifetime membership to Roon this time last year and have since made it my main method of listening. My vinyl has been very sadly neglected! I listen in a box bedroom so size reduction has always been a focus. So when I hooked an Atom powered NUC board to my AudioByte Hydra Z I got what I considered to be the best listening experience overall. But this was 2 or 3 boxes where 1 or 2 could do. AudioByte use off the shelf enclosures with custom front and rear panels for their products. These can be had from Modushop, an Italian vendor of DIY and pro enclosures. Initially I wanted a matching box but during a recent night shift where I had little to do but make test telephone calls every two hours or so I brain stormed this little scheme. My Hydra Z is USB in and SPDIF or i2S over HDMI out. It cleans up and isolates USB before processing to something virtually all DACs can work with. My NUC will be of course Ethernet in and USB out, as are most SBC's like the Raspberry Pi's, Sparky's, Odroid's etc. But there is a specific reason I went NUC. It has none of the compromises of the smaller SBC's. Memory, storage, wireless capabilities are all user configurable by adding the appropriate components. So I want to end up with Ethernet in, i2S over HDMI out and visible to my streaming source. It is also designed well enough that it has no shared resources so USB3 is just that, Gigabit ethernet also. There should be no performance bottlenecks. So, what have I done so far? Watch this space!
