Hello everyone I am trying to learn about passive preamps as I might be in the market for one. Given that many people on here recommend Tilsbury at £100 whilst others go for Music First and spend thousands of pounds I was wondering if this topic is the same as DACS ie they all sound the same or they sound different? I have heard Music First/Quad systems at shows and always liked the sound. Deco Audio make passive pres starting at £200. To be used with a Quad 909/P3ESR. Thanks
Just wanted to share my thoughts on the NVA P20 that I have been using over the last few weeks. Firstly the background is that I recently swapped my Quad 405-2 for a Quad 909 but when I played the new setup for the first time I noticed it was quieter on the right channel. I originally thought it was the 909 but when I swapped the 405 back in I had the same problem. So it was looking like it was the Quad 34 pre amp that was the issue, or maybe the 9 pin din cables that connect to the power amp. So what do to. I had been thinking about using a passive pre in my system for some time, less is more being my approach, and noticed that @bencat had mentioned in a post that he might be selling on an NVA P20. So a PM brought the very generous offer of a loan of the P20 pending the repair of the Quad 34 or a decision to purchase the P20, or another passive. I was taken aback by this offer, not having been active on the forum much, but decided to go for it (Andrew even sent & paid for special delivery to be sorted out later). I am glad I borrowed the P20. With both the 405-2 and 909 the extra clarity is fantastic. It is as if I had tea towels hanging in front of the speakers which have now been removed. I am hearing more detail on tracks I am familiar with and in fact there are improvements in stereo imagery, decay, space etc. I am now thinking of going one step further with the likes of the Khozmo, partly funded by the sale of the 34, once repaired. In the meantime I will carry on enjoying the NVA! Thanks again to Andrew for the loan and introducing me to the passive world.
The clear out continues, up for sale is a Light Dependant Resistor Passive Preamp (LDR) brought offf here a couple of years back. This is a 1 input and 1 output passive preamp which works off LED's to control the volume attenuation. Included in the sale is a Linear Power supply which really does add to the performance of the preamp. There is no box but the item will be well packaged. Please note that this is manual control and does not feature remote control. There are a couple of minor scuffs to the top of the casework which does not reduce any performance of the preamp. Im looking for £170, buyer to pay for postage or collect from Dudley in the West Midlands. Picture of the item for sale
