  2. So today I dropped into my local dealer (Audio T) just to raise one or two questions I had prior to me organising a demo of mainly Spendor speakers (A7 & D7). Because I listen to a lot of female voices and mostly at night, I was just considering whether I might like the Spendor Classic range, and having a contact name from Spendor (from this year’s Bristol Show) wanted to explore their views and the possibility of Audio T getting hold of a pair of the Classic range to include in my demo. Why Spendor? After purchasing my Exposure 3010 pre & 2 x mono power amps, my research often led me to Spendor speakers as being a good match, and especially as I have heard the D7’s at the Bristol Show. Anyway, we got chatting and they happened to have an Exposure 3010S2D integrated amp in their demo room (although they don’t currently stock Exposure), so they offered me an impromptu demo of the A & D 7’s. Just to add that their demo room is a little smaller than my room (4m wide x 5m long). And I’ve just realised thinking back about the demo, that they had a TV on quite loud outside the room replaying the Japan Vs Ireland RWC game (apologies if this reminds any of our Irish rugby supporters) so the sounds in the demo room are ‘coloured’ by the outside noise. With the Exposure 3010S2D feeding the A7’s to start (I forgot to ask what the streamer was but I think it was a Naim unit), and unprepared regarding a playlist, I asked to play something I was listening to the previous evening. So we started with Imelda May and the track ‘Call Me’, followed by Randy Crawford’s ‘I Stand Accused’ and then my dealer’s choice of a track from Karen Souza who I am unfamiliar with. Straight off my first impression was that there was not much difference to my Exposure pre/power and Rega RS5 speakers, but I then started to notice a deeper/heavier bass. Of course the demo room was smaller, being polluted by the TV outside and probably the amp needed a little time to warm up. But when we got into the Randy Crawford track, I started to hear more detail – at first it was the sounds from some of the wind instruments that just sounded ‘more real’, and then there was a greater richness from Randy’s voice. The Karen Souza track included some short piano solos which again sounded more real than I get with my RS5’s. So we then swapped the A7’s for the D7’s (the older version), which apparently are a little more forward than the new version. Now I’ve heard the D7’s before and I remember being transfixed by the realism of the bass – probably playing more up-tempo music. In this demo I was waiting for that ‘night & day’ moment was there just wasn’t. Yes the D7’s sounded a touch more forward, more detailed, and with more bass. I suspect a combination of the type of music being played, me personally maybe not being used to critical listening, and the influence of the demo room all combined to leave me a little underwhelmed. Back home tonight in my larger, quieter listening room, everything sounds really open and clear. So I simply need to sort my work diary out to make sure that I can work from home for at least two Tuesday’s in a row, so that I can get both pairs of speakers home from Saturday evening to Tuesday morning (they have said that I can return on a Wednesday morning if that helps). My gut feeling is that the A7’s will provide the right balance of sound quality versus cost, but I also suspect that when I get the D7’s home and play them with a much larger range of music they will be amazing! To be continued….

  5. FOR SALE £495 Spendor S5e floor standing loudspeakers in cherry wood veneer. One owner from new and in very good condition. Complete with Naim NAC A5 cable links and instructions. I have made a gallery of photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2VVhF3p7X7msZ5QW7 What Spendor said about the speakers: The Spendor S5e is the ideal solution for everyone who demands superb sound from an extremely compact discrete floor standing loudspeaker. The S5e has two individual 140mm Spendor drive units. One driver handles the delicate midrange and upper bass. The second bass unit handles the very low frequencies and it is engineered to match the 3D linear flow port. The result is a small loudspeaker which delivers convincing punch and weight and a surprisingly 'big' sound. The Spendor S5e has excellent efficiency and an easy to drive load so you don't need a big powerful amplifier. With our linear flow reflex technology you can even place the cabinet very close to a rear wall and the bass will remain clean and controlled. The Spendor 'S' series loudspeakers feature many innovations. Linear flow port technology for non-turbulent low frequency air flow and predictable bass response, Spendor 'e' drive unit with stiff, light internally damped ep38 polymer cones for ultra low colouration, and dynamically damped cabinents which reduce energy re-radiation to inaudible levels. Each model delivers a balanced energy output to guarantee a consistent sound and a vivid seamless sound stage in a diversity of living environments. This technology is complemented by elegant modern styling. Whether you listen to music or film, stereo or surround sound, there is a Spendor loudspeaker system to match your individual lifestyle. There are a couple of marks to the cabinets which are shown in the last two images of the photo gallery. I also don't have the original boxes as they were thrown out (by mistake) after a recent house move. I'm happy to demonstrate at my home in Monmouthshire, Wales. .
  6. Hi All, Well this seems like a speaker that I have been waiting an eternity to come in, after falling in love with the D7’s I was straight onto Spendor to find out when a D9 would be available, well a couple of years later I am really pleased to say that HiFi Lounge have just taken delivery of the first pair to leave Spendor and they have certainly been well worth the wait. I have just finished un-boxing them and have them running in now and straight out the box they sound really excellent, for me it is the mid range that really stands out but more than that they are just such a well balanced speaker through the whole range, great detail, very revealing but at the same time very musical, can’t wait to get some more hours on them as it is hard to believe they are going to get any better to be honest. The Pictures below probably don’t do the Premium Rosewood finish that we ordered them in justice but I must say that they look absolutely stunning, this is a £1000 option, making them £7495 but I have to say that it is worth every penny as it is one of the best speaker finishes I have ever seen, absolutely stunning. So if you fancy listening to the the new D9 please feel free to get in touch anytime to arrange an appointment and if you are interesting in maybe trading in a D7 or any speaker for the D9 please feel free to get in touch to discuss your options. http://hifilounge.co.uk/spendor-d9-speakers Below are a few pictures of the un-boxing. Time to run them in Cheers, Paul.
